How much would a primrose bathroom suite devalue my house??

We are going to put a new bathroom in our house this year (much needed) and I really fancy a primrose yellow one. I think I may have been inspired by Kirstie Horseplopp.... Anyway, I've thought for years that coloured suites would soon come back into fashion and they haven't - but won't that change? Maybe? How much would a yellow suite put you off a house?

your house, your choice. White is a selling point because it means 'bathroom replaced in the last 10 years' but you could always tweak your sales details to say 'new bathroom'.

I probably wouldn't choose one, but if I loved the rest of the house it wouldn't put me off.
If I was doing up a house to sell I'd put in a bog standard white one, if I was doing it for me I'd put in what I like.

Hmmmm, there's the thing - I'm not sure if we'll be in this house for 2 years or 10 years. I wouldn't put in a 'vintage' one like kirstie - it would have to be brand new, but you can buy them brand new if you go to a specialist supplier.

How much are you planning on spending on said yellow bathroom suite and how far in the future are you planning on potentially selling your house?

I would say if you're going to be there several years and will enjoy having the colour you like then go for it. If you are looking at selling in the next year or two perhaps go for some gorgeous yellow accessories with a white suite instead?

It probably wouldn't put me off buying a house, but I would take the cost of replacing the bathroom in to account when making an offer.

Maybe I should just paint the walls yellow. I think it would be quite expensive to install a yellow suite because I would have to have it made to order. They're not mass produced any more obviously. I just can't find any white suites that I like - they all look the same and it's giving me a headache.

My plumber says he's put in 3 coloured bathroom suites this year, having never put them in before! They are coming back in fashion (one was red).

Having just ripped out a dark chocolate brown one I can confirm they are a complete pain to keep clean...think of the toothpaste marks!!

Wouldn't put me off. Bathroom suites are relatively easy to change out if you dont' need to swap the position of things. Relative to the cost of a house its nothing. Get what you like-- I also think coloured bathroom suites will be coming back in fashion. Colour in general is making a comeback after years and years of everything being some shade of beige or white.

My last house had a pink bathroom suite when we moved in and we couldn't afford to replace it -it was 20 years old. My current house had a 20 year old avacodo bathroom suite which we replaced because it was knackered and not very attractive and were then in a position to afford to replace it.

If the rest of the house was exactly what I wanted then it'd be OK. If there was something else that I was not keen on then it would put me off.

I think they will come back. I was looking recently to see if I could find a pale blue bathroom suite. I would like it as I'm not keen on all the white and beige stuff.

Primrose is a pale pastel yellow - number 17 on this chart. I also rather like no. 26, the whisper blue... Do you like wednesbury??

It wouldn't put me off buying a house at all. Stuff like that is always possible to change if you dont like it.

I'm not surprised coloured bathrooms are coming back. There are so many coloured kitchens about nowadays bathrooms were sure to follow.

It sounds rather nice actually. Not sure I'd be brave enough to go for it myself, but if you want it and would enjoy it then do it It's good to be different!

I am quite liking the idea of a retro bathroom - I would put in a bath in primrose, a basin in pink and a toilet in blue, perhaps, and some sort of 1950s ice cream parlour colour scheme on the walls


You can get them 'reclaimed', apparently.

But I will be avoiding aubergine and maroon. Shudder!

It wouldn't put me off buying - ours had a champagne beige one. And primrose isn't offensive. But pastel colours seem a bit twee to me so I wouldn't like it.

There's a pink suite in a skip down my road if anyone wants that

Shame you didn't post this 2 months ago when we ripped our yellow 1970s suite out. You'd have been welcome to the manky looking set. A few words of warning: the water will take on the same yellow tinge as your sanitary ware, making it look as if you are washing and bathing in diluted piss and your loo lo

We still have our blue and green downstairs loo depressingly . Any bids?

I'd go for number 9. Although we basically have a corner bath in that colour in a skip in our garden so I guess I wouldn't.

It wouldn't put me off buying your house, but I would knock off the cost of ripping it out and redoing the bathroom.
Our bathroom was redone last year and it cost us £18,000. Bugger of it was that it had a white suite anyway.

If you had a white suite to my taste I wouldn't be looking to reduce the offer price based on the bathroom, I'd live with it. I couldn't live with primrose yellow (my parents had one) There's such a huge variety of baths, basins and toilet shapes these days I simply don't see why you could possibly say that all white looks the same.

Why don't you go with white and accessorize with primrose yellow in the window blind, towels and toiletries?

Not really a reply but something has puzzled me about American sit-com bathrooms.

I was watching Frasier and Two and a Half men recently and both the bathrooms were black suites. They were in homes of supposedly well off and in Frasier's case impeccable taste: SO WHY THE BLACK LOO?!

I realised, that day, I needed to get out more.
