Clawdy Fri 28-Feb-14 17:29:40 kitchen. Can you do without them, even around sink and behind cooker? just have wallpaper? Would it be impossible and stain really badly?

It would stain. You could use something else instead of tiles. A splashback, metal or Perspex or something like that.

Thought that might be so.

We've just got paint (white) except behind the hob where we have a glass splashback. We have a window behind the sink and a small upstand all the way round to match the worktop. We have no staining and even if we did it's just white emulsions so it's easy to touch up.
I'm not sure I'd do wallpaper behind hob or sink without a clear glass splashback to protect it.

Thanks wonky. Will look at splashbacks!

I have one row of tiles and kitchen paint above, apart from around of the hob.

You can coat emulsion with Polyvine which protects it.

Might be able to use it on wallpaper too..I'm not sure.

We considered wallpapering behind the hob and then putting a glass splashback on top to protect it. Didn't do it in the end but I think it would have worked fine.

Can't imagine anything worse than wallpaper in a kitchen behind a hob. Large format tiles or glass are better. Behind a sink you just need a few inches of upstand.
