"remove the head and leave it submerged in a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water overnight. This will completely remove all lime scale."? Really?

Watching with interest!

Yup.

husband regularly leaves in a pot of cheapest vinegar. Reuse vinegar.

GoodnessIsThatTheTime Fri 21-Feb-14 22:09:26

Does kettle too.

Yep, I regularly descale the kettle with white vinegar.

Lostmumof31974 Fri 21-Feb-14 22:11:17

Doesn't it smell for ages after and make brew smell wrong too?

mousmous Fri 21-Feb-14 22:11:19

yes.
works best with warm water.
works for descaling a kettle and getting rid of lime scale in the loo, too.
brilliant stuff.
and cheap.
and safe around dc.

the smell doesn't linger. not more than bleach anyway.

ShoeJunkie Fri 21-Feb-14 22:12:53

You need to rinse/boil a couple of kettle-fulls of water and then it's fine.

Yes it works, for both showers & kettles. I keep a stock of white vinegar for just this purpose. It's great for removing limescale on taps and shower screens too.

I always boil the kettle a couple of times after descaling and throw the water away.

Wow. Thanks ladies (and perhaps gents)... I'm on it!

IwishIwasmoreorganised Fri 21-Feb-14 22:19:58

I'm guessing that I could do the ends of taps in this way too?

Vinegar won't damage the surface (?chrome I think)?

Did it recently with our shower head which I have tried hard to clean in several other ways. Used white vinegar with a bit of water. It came out spotless and working beautifully
I left it in for a long time - all day I think

StressheadMcGee Fri 21-Feb-14 22:23:12

Definitely works, I frequently soak the shower head (I'm a northerner, can't stand the scuzzy hard water down here)

GoodnessIsThatTheTime Fri 21-Feb-14 22:35:32

We leave it overnight.

Forago Fri 21-Feb-14 22:38:37

Itdoes your kettle too

MichaelFinnigan Fri 21-Feb-14 22:40:16

So whee do you buy vinegar? Our supermarket has just got a small bottle of malt, for chips

Forago Fri 21-Feb-14 22:45:38

Tesco, larger bottle, has to be white vinegar. I use about half to descale the kettle. With a bit of water.

Astounds me every time how it makes the kettle like new!

GoodnessIsThatTheTime Fri 21-Feb-14 22:46:20

We use malt if it's cheap. Works fine.

OnePlanOnHouzz Sat 22-Feb-14 17:07:47

why, after reading all that, do I now have an urge for chips ?!?!
