Hi,my husband and I and 3 children are planning to relocate to Derby due to my dh work located in the sin fin area,We have a budget of around £280k to buy a home no more than 30 miles from his work place. We prefer a quiet location away from pubs and clubs ,but also accessible for the kids to travel into city centreI am thinking of more north of Derby ie Matlock. Also we are white Scottish so would like to be somewhere for the kids to settle more easily where we are not the minority ,just equally mixed groups. Also a good secondary school is really important for us ,I would be great full for any information on the best areas and high schools please

Saw you hadn't had any response so I thought I stick my oar inGrinUsed to live just south of Chesterfield, on the edge of the Peaks and know the area fairly well but it's 10 years since I lived there so a bit out of date. I don't know much about Derby as we always shopped in Sheffield, where I worked. We are southerners and people always commented but never found it an issue (loads of my colleagues were Scots).

Matlock area, Darley Dale, Ashover, Woolley Moor etc are all nice and if you can get something in the Peak Park it's lovely, if pricey and restrictive re extensions. Bakewell and Baslow are lovely. Prices get cheaper outside the park. Bakewell has the excellent Lady Manners Secondary school - I'm assuming it's still excellentGrin. Lots of good schools in the area. You'll probably want to avoid ex mining villages but otherwise the countryside is great. M1 is obviously a fast route north to south but beware that there are often mega problems around junction 28. Property is often advertised as offers over or Guide price so check this before proceeding. Feel free to come back to me if you any more info.

The villages towards Ashbourne are lovely. Clifton, places like that.

Ashbourne is a good area with easy access to the Peak District and on to Manchester.Queen Elizabeth Grammer School is a good school.

It even has its own Highland gathering every year

Belper, Wirksworth, Cromford are all Matlock direction and nice. You want to be careful going that way with snow- a lot of the villages nearer the peak can get it quite bad.

If you're not set on North of Derby something on the Nottingham side might be nice in terms of better access to the motorway and the options of going into Nottingham for work/college etc (your money would probably go further too)

Oh, I've always likedt the area around Calke Abbey (Melbourne etc) but I imagine that's quite dear.

I would recommend Mellbourne as well, maybe Ticknall or Willington, Etwall as they are on the same side of Derby as Sinfin. If your OH has to travel from Matlock each day, it is a very very long drive and not good in bad weather.

The secondary school for Melbourne used to be in Chellaston and I think that is still the case and it is a good school. Etwall has its own decent secondary, but not sure about the other 2. All have decent public transport links into Derby as well.
