Foul smell in downstairs loo

I have a very horrible shit smell in my downstairs loo which is next to the front door.

Its a rented property, which is 7 years old. I ve had this smell since i moved in 5 months ago. Dh is a plumber and has sealed all places were the smell could be coming from.

However its not worked, dh says he doesnt know what the problem is and that he thinks its a big job to sort out.

Has anyone any ideas? I can sometimes smell it in my living room too which is next to the toilet

sounds like the waste pipe is leaking somewhere or has been leaking in the past. I don't know what to suggest to fix it, maybe an endoscopic camera to look into the waste pipe to see if you can see anything obvious?

Do you know whether this problem would be covered under the 10 year warranty?

Would you mention it to the landlord or just put up with it?

Mention it. If it is an ongoing problem dealing with it quickly will be a good thing. Although the LL may not see it that way....

Oh yuk, poor you! Our house was derelict before we moved (august) and we stripped the bathroom back to the brick/joists and started from scratch. We were gutted come November once the central heating came on that a strong smell of shit wafted through the house. We think it must have been soaked into the joists!

Have you noticed the smell is stronger when your heating is on? If so it might be waking up dormant shitty smell in the fabric of the building. We put an air brick (is that what you call it?) In the outside wall to vent the smell more quickly and by the next winter is was gone...but that was out house and our problem, definitely speak to your landlord about it!!

I had this in my old house & the drain that the downstairs loo ran into was partially blocked. Toilet was still flushing somehow so it took me ages to work out the cause.
We rodded the drain and the smell disappeared. It was vile while it lasted

Asked dh and he says there is no durgo on it.

Going to see what happens when dh rods the drains, if its still not clearing, im going to have to speak to the landlord.

Heating on or off makes no difference, but the smell is alot stronger sometimes, but not at other times.

Dh has been out to the manhole which is next to the downstairs toilet, did afew water tests, not sure what! He also put his cctv up there and it appears the drain has collasped. This is obviously what the problem is.

Have contacted landlord, by text as shes not answering her phone. Not looking forward to her response, i dont think shes going to want to spend the money on it

Well she has no choice but to deal with it - you aren't paying rent to live with a smell like that! She's lucky your DH was able to diagnose the problem without having the expense of a company in to do the same.

if she is reluctant or slow, this is a Public Health matter and I am sure your local authority will twist her arm.

It is unusual for a modern house to have a collapsed drain. Was it joined to an old clay pipe for an adjacent house?
