What about laminate? I'm started another thread but haven't had feedback. I'm curious.

Yes looking for laminate in white, I think I'll just go back to ikea for custom made ones as having trouble finding them anywhere

We got a wood-effect laminate (which everyone thinks is real, it even feels like wood iyswim - with a grain and everything) and I am so pleased.

I put pans down on it, spill stuff all the time and don't wipe it til evening - it's v. low maintenace.

I don't like the shinyness of granite, and the rest was just too expensive for me to contemplate. I prefer the units and the walls (nice paint) being the stars of the kitchen rather than the worktop.

Bushboard make laminate work tops - they've got several in white and 3m length.

You don't have to have polished granite if you don't want it shiny.

Well I'm in France but I got it at our local DIY shop, Leroy Merlin.

I had to order it in though, they didn't keep it in stock but they had a range of samples to touch, which make all the difference from just looking at pics in catalogues - I totally changed my mind about what to go for once I had seen the samples.

It wasn't one of the cheaper ones, but even the expensive laminates are about 10x (or more?) cheaper than granite (or slate which we seriously considered).

I'm also delighted that I don't have to worry that I spent a fortune on worktops that I would then feel I have to live with for the rest of my life (although knowing DH I probably will anyway - but I love these so that's fine!).
