Discount wood burning stoves?

Does such a thing exist? We're trying to do a refurb on a budget, and I've managed to get all sorts of things at a discount, but woodburners just don't seem to be sold at a discount at all, anywhere, ever.

What I'm hoping is that there is some brilliant site I have missed, so if you know of it, I will be eternally grateful!

2nd hand/refurbished or ex display- you may get a bargain.
What sort of price were you thinking of?

Def. avoid the cheap Chinese import ones on ebay etc and ones from Machine Mart.

Not sure of your budget but you can buy an excellent Charnwood one (Country 4) for around £550 and it is a cracking little stove- superb build quality

Last year we spotted a log burner that we liked in a couple of places. It retailed for around £650-£700. We found the exact same log burner on Ebay with a guy that was importing just a couple of designs in bulk and we paid £300. It has had a lot of use and we are glad we shopped around. The importer guy was in Worcester if that is of any use to you.

Mine was only £450 or so, I found the one I wanted (£800 from manufacturer) and got it much cheaper online (it had some minor enamel damage). I think the prices might have gone up a bit recently. Anyway, it's a lovely stove and much admired by my installer and I don't even notice the chips any more. I have the pot of paint to touch it up, but can never be bothered.

We like the modern, rounder ones, but they are mostly £1,000+, which is a lot of money, And we need a reasonable size one as it is in the humungous inglenook that we've uncovered.

But reconditioned may be the way to go though, and perhaps a bit of compromise on the style..

You can drive yourself to distraction with a stove purchase.
We got a 'great' deal from a local place who convinced the manufacturers to knock 30% off.
2 weeks after fitting I saw the exact same stove in the local builders merchant for half what we paid. Totally gutted
Just make sure it's all HETAS approved and you'll be fine will 2nd hand or reconditioned.

I'm in the market for a stove and I'm boggled with choice. Where do I even begin? I did an online calculator thing that said I need a 5kw one but what are the reputable brands? I've been reading about HETAS too.
I'd like a classic not modern style but not twee as it's an older house.
Reconditioned or 2nd had bargains would be good!!

You have factored in the cost of lining the chimney, right? Our stove wasn't cheap, but it did cost less than having a flue liner fitted!

helicopter - good brands are Charnwood, Clearview (both made in Britain), Morso (Swedish?) - what stove is a good unbiased site.

Avoid the chinese rubbish - false economy!

We've been advised that 5kw is good, because with a higher heat output than that you are meant to have additional ventilation in the room. A good stove/fireplace co should come and give you a survey and quote for free which will help with that.

Helliecopter - the links that gatekeeper put above are good for reconditioned, but we want a more modern one, and there aren't many of those reconditioned yet!

we have a mate in the plumbing/gas trade. we found the stove we wanted, researched etc, visted all the posh stove showrooms etc and then asked mate to get it for us through his trade account.

you must factor in the cost of fitting as well...worth getting a few quotes from places who will do the whole job...they vary massively!

we love ours so much that we've got another one for the other room too!

I keep reading about the cheap ones being no good but I have to disagree. I got mine from homebase in the sale for £100!! It's the same as this one www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/clarke-buckingham-cast-iron-stove from Machine Mart.

I've had it a few years now and it's just fine. IME it's much more important to get good dry wood - that's what seems to make a real difference.

Also worth spending on the flue (make sure it's double-insulated) so that you get a good 'draw' and know there are no nasty CO2 leaks. You must get it fitted by a HETAS registered person and install a CO2 detector in any case. That's part of the building regs. Also I got some slate and got it cut at Corfe Stone for £40. So all in, mine was under £1000.

Oh and I certainly wouldn't get a secondhand one. You need a warrantied one and to know its provenance. Hairline cracks may not be obvious until its installed, lit and leaking!

if you buy a reconditioned one from a stove specialist then they check for cracks in the cast. We bought our Morso from Dean Forge stoves- see link in my earlier post- and apart from some marks inside the stove, it looked new

Agree by bunch. Our cheap imported one, which is exactly same model being sold in expensive shop is excellent. Where we live we have to use it a lit and it has been great. Only 5kw but heats the house really well. Just had chimney swept and is working even better now.
