Cost of a new kitchen?

We have a relatively small space to work with and DP is insisting we go with HomeBase. They have quoted us £10,000.

Could we get it cheaper elsewhere? It just seems an awful lot to me for a small space!

We've just had quotes from 2 kitchen companies for a big awkward shaped kitchen (approx 3.5x 6m) for a pretty nice high end kitchen with a huge wall of larder units & shelving.
Quote for bespoke beautiful handbuilt oak kitchen with granite worktops Inc appliances(neff,Miele) fitting, electrics, flooring etc. - £30k
Quote for oak kitchen from a kitchen range again with granite tops - Inc appliances(neff/Miele), flooring, lighting, electrics etc. - £23k
So for me a small kitchen from homebase seems a lot at £10k

I've just done the kitchen planner on Ikea for our small kitchen, and the units came to 1600, so there would be appliances, fitting, flooring and tiling on top of that. Still reckon it would be a lot cheaper than your quote. My sis has an Ikea kitchen and it really gets a hammering, it's lasted really well.

We have had quotes from several kitchen companies over the last month and the prices varied enormously. Our fab kitchen fitter will cost £2500 (this includes all plumbing / electrics / tiling / flooring etc) and we eventually settled on a Benchmarx shaker kitchen. They were able to beat Wren's price and we were very impressed with their customer service.
Mind you, it's all being done in October, so will let you know!

We bought cabinets and handles from them 5 years ago and were very happy. The independent kitchen fitter that we paid by the day to fit them, was very impressed and used them for his daughter's kitchen. Because the units come rigid, you save a day or two of the fitters time. Time=£££££
We found that www.graniteplanet.co.uk was the best place to buy granite counter tops. Cheaper even than an outfit from Poland. Their service was great too. Some granite cracked, probably the fault of our tiler. They came out the next week and replaced the whole piece without a quibble.
We used a combination of www.appliancecity.co.uk/ and John Lewis to buy our appliances.
It's actually not that difficult to bring in your own carpenter, plumber and electrician to do all this. If you find one good tradesman you trust, he will often be able to recommend the other tradesmen you need because he knows them from working with them on jobs frequently.
You will save a fortune. And you will have full control.

I wouldn't bother with Homebase.
Either go to small local places or IKEA if you can face the faff or Benchmarx (good design/service and not too ££).
Arrange your own fitters but it will take longer that way.

you don't say how small the space is nor what the 10k includes - Is it just units/appliances or does it include floor/lights etc?

We got a quote from Homebase, minus appliances it came out at 5k including their 'this week only' discount. When the week was up they phoned me fairly regularly to offer me 'sale' prices for the next x amount of days if I placed my order there and then. Can't stand those sort of sales tactics.

Ordered our kitchen from Ikea instead which was 2k and included fridge and dishwasher, we got other appliances elsewhere. I think that was for 16 units so fairly large.

Ikea all the way. I'm an architect and regularly specify it. If well fitted they look infinitely more expensive. Just won a which award for best value I think too.

We have just had a new kitchen fitted. Used our kitchen fitter and electrician etc as it was a lit cheaper than the quotes we had.
We had designs done by both Howdens and Wickes. Went with Wickes and can't fault the kitchen. Have all the drawers, magic corners and pull out larders that I wanted. Also got our appliances from them (researched prices on the Internet and they were well priced).
We got our work top from another company which saved us a fair bit.
Am really pleased with the Wickes kitchen though it does help that the guy who fitted it for us is a but if a perfectionist and made sure everything was exact. They gave offers on and were matching other quotes.

We have had various quotes and Homebase were the most expensive by far.

We had our best quote from Wickes. However, we did not get a quote from Ikea. Many people seem to rate Ikea highly.

Not Homebase. Expensive for what you get and not as good quality as other places.
Ikea, Wren, independent shops are worth a look.
Heard from several kitchen fitters that Wickes are pretty good too for quality.

We went with an independent shop. I have a large kitchen with quartz worksurfaces, a babe of a larder cupboard and it was under £10,000 ( but we didn't get any lighting under cupboards as something had to give.)

I've got a thread running on here saying it feels like dealing with double-glazing salesmen.

I cancelled my Homebase order this morning. They just bull-shitted me once too often.

Their prices are ridiculous i.e. £216 for a basic wine rack so they can discount it by 50% immediately and then by a further 15% special offer weekend. Installation by them would have far exceeded the cost of the units. It's a very small kitchen only 3.3 x 2m but the costs would have been approaching £8K!
Incredibly, the cost of a handle is not included. The handles for the cabinets would have cost £234! The same handles in B&Q are £4.50 a pair! Their appliance prices appear to be inflated by 15% more than identical appliances in Currys - but they then knock 15% off. I feel insulted that they think I'm that stupid!

I actually told them the reason I was cancelling wax their total lack of transparency on pricing.

Am waiting for installation quotes from independent store and independent fitter for a different kitchen. Units are almost identical to Homebase and roughly the same price but look better quality and basic installation is cheaper.

If that fails I shall ask independent fitter to buy trade somewhere.

The suppliers all seem to think that we grown adults are incapable of designing and costing a kitchen! I was a PM working on multi million £ multi-national programmes. Working out the cost of a kitchen should be easy- but they constantly muddy the waters.
