Ways to save money when renovating, top tips?

We are (hopefully) about to buy a house that needs a fair bit of updating. Unfortunately we won't be able to do all the work immediately as we won't have the budget. We intend to do as much as we can ourselves once the Bridget's been spent it'll be as and when finances allow. So I wondered what tips you might all have for saving money on renovations?

Do the bits that make it liveable now. Heating, kitchen, bathroom.
Do as much of the work yourselves as you can. Even things like laying carpet if you YouTube some tutorials and buy the tools it works out much much cheaper and isn't a hard job like you think.

Make a decision and stick to it. Change of plans are expensive.

Shop around, go to the expensive places and make notes/take pictures then go online. B&Q had a range of vinyl I liked for £20psqm online the same name is £13psqm. No difference.
