Pls critique this house

We have 2 children would use the other 2 bedrooms for au pair and guests, so I don't mind their not being upstairs.....

For the money, I don't like it. No ensuite, the kitchen is too small, is odd.

Main rooms look ok for size and it seems light. Only one bathroom? Will that work if you've got an aupair? What's the outside space and parking like?

Actually really like the layout - especially considering the way you are planning to use the downstairs bedrooms.
One thing I don't like is the fact that there is only one bathroom, even though there is the other shower.
The two downstairs bedrooms do not have a bathroom - maybe you could extend the toilet and creat a showerroom/toilet but that might make the one bedroom very small.

could be gorgeous.... just looks like it might need abit of TLC. But I love the victorian feel to it (from the outside, not much in the way of period features inside, but then pictures might just not be showing that very well).
Yes its pricey, but so is everything in the southeast!
Road doesnt bother me personally - house looks set back from it, but no idea how busy it might get. But that probs still wouldnt bother me either.
I like it, but probs wouldnt pay full asking for it....

Nice, large bright sitting room, dining room a bit pokey.

I've no idea whether it's a valid sort of price for the area but it just doesn't look like a £1M house. The outside is a bit - well, not shabby exactly but no wow factor.

And I can't work out if there's much of a garden - the bit you can see looks like it needs a lot of work.

Oh my goodness portofino - please dont take offence but the house you prefer is lots cheaper because its a very ugly 1960s house with those hideous leaded windows (why does ANYONE put those into new houses?!!). The one OP posted is a victorian gate lodge - you can't compare them!!

Oh I like porto's one - you could imagine living in that. Maybe that's what's missing from #1 - no homeliness to it.

If you are Savin 300 k you could afford to change the windows and do cosmetic work. The flow of the house is much better.

i like it (I like old and quirky though) but the outside looks like it needs a lot of work and the inside needs some too. it is quite a busy road

is this a family home or a weekend home?

I prefer the location of the gate house, sorry but the other house is in Marlow Bottom where I don't want to live.
I think the road is quite a popular one and other houses are a lot bigger than this one. We could definitely make it feel more homely, cleaner and more comfy. Wd need to add a better bathroom downstairs, agreed.

Of course I can compare them. It is a house. Are people so poncey that they would prefer to live in a cramped house because it is OLD than improve a house that had proper space for a family? Neither of them were endowed with period features.

It would be our only home, but kids might be at boarding school in a few years, so we don't want a cavernous place.....

If the location was 100% I wd consider any age house. Don't like the sunken patio effect of the marlow bottom one at all, wd be dark.

I agree with portofino. Don't get me wrong, historically the OPs house choice is grander- but practically the second house is better. Downstairs bedroom/bath is great with an aupair.

Why Marlow, could you move elsewhere and get more bang for your buck?

The road looks like it runs round the property on two sides. (Might be just the photo angle though) .Maybe that would be quite intrusive.

Seems an awful lot of money for not a lot of house. Only one bathroom. Not a particularly big kitchen or living room.
Garden looks very unloved.
All the character is on the outside.
I wouldn't even pay half that asking price for it.
