I thought I would go for eggshell but I've been told that gloss is making a revival? What are your thoughts?

Eggshell: Nil

Interesting.

thinking about it, it depends what colour?
black ,red ,racing green should be gloss
but if f&b watery colours they should be eggshell.

I would have said gloss but then I used International exterior satin as it was in the sale, and it is BEAUTIFUL and the finish is superb. so I'm sticking with that! even if it is brown.

eggshell is not good on doors really

LoveGigi Wed 01-May-13 11:06:32

The colour I've chosen is Dix Blue by F&B. I've got a north facing recessed storm porch entrance to my Victorian brick house. So eggshell for this shade or gloss?

ouryve Wed 01-May-13 11:07:10

I'm all for eggshell internally (though not impressed with the matt paint for woodwork that's available) since its less glary, but I love to see a proper shiny gloss front door.

ouryve Wed 01-May-13 11:08:20

Now I've seen that colour, I'm torn. That shade screams eggshell, LoveGigi.

RooneyMara Wed 01-May-13 11:09:20

You mean Mumsnet blue yes? as in the colour of Olivia's posts grin

RooneyMara Wed 01-May-13 11:10:32

Oh no sorry, it's more the colour of my posts. hmm, ahem. blush

I would still go for gloss. As long as it is quite a gentle gloss.

Yonihadtoask Wed 01-May-13 11:11:44

MMmmm... Gloss I say.

Our front door is white, but is a matte paint.

I think any colours look better a bit shiney ;)

LoveGigi Wed 01-May-13 11:17:22

For the people who have gloss, did you choose it because of it's appearance or practicality?

LoveGigi Wed 01-May-13 11:23:10

Am I just a big fat cliche? wink

JazzAnnNonMouse Wed 01-May-13 11:49:07

Practically speaking gloss everytime. Matt gets grubby v v quickly and soon looks shit.
Looks beautiful for about 10 minutes.

LoveGigi Wed 01-May-13 12:13:17

At a glance the consensus is sitting at around 80% for gloss versus 20% eggshell.

LoveGigi Wed 01-May-13 12:18:59

RooneyMara, thanks for the link.

NotGoodNotBad Wed 01-May-13 12:24:42

Gloss. It's the law. wink

PigletJohn Wed 01-May-13 12:54:53

gloss

will not get so dirty, and will be easier to clean.

RooneyMara Wed 01-May-13 14:12:46

I have to say my lovely satin door looks so nice about months in - its' been absolutely fine, it is on the protected side of the house though so gets no lashing rain etc.

It looks like someone has poured chocolate over it smile Very fine and smooth finish.

RooneyMara Wed 01-May-13 14:13:58

also very hardwearing - I have tried to chip the edges a good few times and only managed it once with a piece of furniture I think it was...

I think International paint is just super solid stuff iyswim. It wipes clean very easily too.

RooneyMara Wed 01-May-13 14:14:27

6 months

JazzAnnNonMouse Wed 01-May-13 17:14:38

But yours is a dark colour - I'm not sure a light colour would hold up so well if not gloss.
