I would get the artex sampled by a UKAS accredited company. It will tell either way whether it contains asbestos or not. Loads of properties in the 60s,70s and 80s had asbestos containing artex.
If the artex is in good condition the HSE school of thought is to manage it.

Asbestos was used in small quantities, in artex up to about 2000. It will be ok as long as you leave it alone.

This is worrying - we were just about to book a plasterer to plaster over our rather horrid artex ceilings in our rather horrid 1960s house. Does plastering over involve disturbing the artex? can anyone advise if this is a good idea?

I wouldn't bother with samples. I would ask a plasterer to skim the lot and take the cost off the house price offer.

Asbestos is fine as long as it's not damaged

Hmm, we hve just moved into a place with old artex ceilings. Is damage done in the past anything to worry about? DS is sleepin in a room in which the precious owners had put hooks and a few pins into the ceiling. We were planning on skimming but won't be certy soon unfortunately...

Don't worry artex only contains less than 5% asbestos, when I used to analyse using microscope it it took ages to find it.

Does that make artex non-hazardous, asianqueen?
