We had a similar situation - pack one day, move the next - and I tipped at the end of day one. IIRC we tipped £100 cash to the guy in charge and told him to distribute it as he saw fit, as we had more lads in helping with the packing than we did for the move. We used Pickfords - not only were they the cheapest by a good margin, they were utterly superb and went above and beyond just packing and moving us. They did also get through 80 tea bags in two days though...

We used SBS and bought the guys lunch and a crate of beer.
Pickfords were awful, quoted for a job they knew they couldn't actually fulfill, why would anyone do that? Luckily SBS stepped in at the last minute and were absolutely brilliant!

you are never 'supposed' to tip, this is not America. You tip if you feel that a good job has been done, cheerfully, carefully and above and beyond what you paid. You tip whatever you feel appropriate and it should always be accepted with thanks. And yes, food and drinks during the hard work always show real thought and are definitely appreciated too.

I gave £20 each to the guys who shifted our stuff from house to storage 150 miles away, and then a tenner each to the chap who moved it from storage to the second house 20 miles away. Both good jobs done and both said 'thank you' I also left good reviews on the company websites mentioning the staff concerned by name.

if you had good service, leave a review as many only do so when they have problems.

ps both tips totalled a bit under 10% of the cost of the service. For what that matters.
