Sealing/priming/painting mdf

We've had some new mdf cupboards built - and now have to paint them. Carpenter said to seal the edges and then paint with acrylic paint: 2 x undercoat then 2 x top coat. Sounded simple but after staring at products in DIY shop I don't know where to start. And google has confused me more.
Seal with what? Pva sealer stuff in a tin, some kind of homemade dilute glue solution, or primer?
Then does it all need more priming? And with what? Google consensus says yes, with oil based primer. But carpenter didnt mention this. And then can you put acrylic on top of oil based primer?
So many questions, does anyone know?

I agree with polter I primed all of my melamine kitchen cupboards with the international primer prior to painting. I put it on very thinly with a small roller and left to dry over night. Worked a treat!
