Loft floor

Hi...can anyone tell me if putting basic flooring down in a loft requires permission? I only want chipboard or MDF covering so I can store stuff, no plans (yet!) for a working room of sorts...

Not as far as I am aware. I've had in done in two houses, as have most of my friends, and no-one has ever suggested it is a requirement.

you only need BR approval if you are turning it into a habitable room. This is usually recognised by the presence of a fixed staircase. A foldaway loft ladder is OK.

If you ever intend to turn it into a habitable room, it is vital to do it properly, especially strengthening the floor timbers and not cutting the roof. Non-compliant loft conversions are quite common, and they add negative value to a house, since the buyer has to budget for ripping it all out and doing it again properly.
