I am considering moving to Liverpool, need to visit after Christmas. Please can you tell me good/bad points, which areas are best , transport , things to do, infact all info gratefully received. My daughter has just gone to Uni so just me and partner to please. Am looking for large Victorian/ edwardian properties but in decent, safe area. Also want to know what job situation is like could possibly transfer with current employer but ideally would like to start afresh . Thanks

I used to live in Merseyside (was about 20 mins drive out of Liverpool) and was a lovely area, but don't know if that's too far from where you want to be based?

(should say, it was a particular area within Merseyside not just the whole county Xmas Smile )

What is your budget and what see your interests? Generally south Liverpool has the nicest areas

I would go to the Wirral with that budget, 20 mins on the bus or train over to Liverpool and a safer area.
As for the job situation, dire in my experience depends what you do but we emigrated to Australia it was that bad.

Bootle is really rough, Walton not too bad but pretty rough.
Formby is nice, Allerton is ok

Somewhere like Oxton?

Report

Oxton wouldn't be my first choice although lots of the doctors who work in liverpool live there as its a short enough journey through the tunnel.
I don't know how many bedrooms you need but I'd imagine you could find a decent house in a nice area over the water.

Hi, for that budget you'll be able to get somewhere quite nice. I wouldn't go to Bootle or Walton as both can be a little rough. In South Liverpool I would look at L17 (Aigburth) and L18 (Mossley Hill). Both have rail and bus routes into the city, or else it's a 10 minute drive in the car. There are also nice parks and restaurants nearby so you wouldn't necessarily have to go into town for a drink or meal in the evening. One thing to bear in mind is that Liverpool seems to have a real mix of people in all areas. For instance I am in L17 and on a really 'nice' street. I'd happily have a house on the 2 or 3 streets further up from mine but I wouldn't have bought a house on the street one down from mine. It's always worth having a good look around!

The areas you mention are all a bit rough. Try Crosby- it's by the beach, nice, in your price range, and 15 mins drive or local trainline from the city centre.

id agree with looking atL18 / 17, also check out Ainsdale (technically bottom of sefton) and for that matter Formby, but excellent transport links and most people around the areawork in or near liverpool. If you have the choice dont do Bootle, City or Walton as they are vey mixed.
other areas worth a look are Bebbington (wirral) or Crosby... maybe Maghull. You getagood amount of house for your money and the area is lovely, good motorway and rail.
good luck!Smile

I live in Maghull and it is a nice area and about 20 mins on train to Liverpool city centre, but you won't find many period houses for sale here. I second BOF in looking at Crosby, lots of period properties there.

I'd be finding a job first tbh
Best of luck with your move

I used to live in Childwall and that was fine, good links to the motorway and fairly quick into the city. Woolton is also nice enough but dont know how far your 200k would go there.

The job situation is really bad - if you want a fresh start I'd find a job first.

The Wirral is a real mix - the safe areas on the train line are lovely but are expensive as a result, the rough(er) areas are cheap(er). In Oxton you aren't that close to a station. Greasby doesn't have a station either. I'd be tempted by West Kirby or Heswall - though both a bit further from Liverpool. Where are you living now?
