DH says we can't move in yet [sad]

House renovation been going on since April. We have been in a static in the front garden. House is nearly, nearly finished. Stuff came out of storage on Monday (apart from furniture mosly all in boxes in the sitting room - not unpacked yet). I want to move in.

Builder should be finishing the shower in the en-suite tomorrow and says we should be able to move in and sleep there from tomorrow night.

DH has come home from work tonight and said no. Too much stuff not finished - bedroom doors not painted, main bathroom suite in but not functioning yet, no hanging rails in the wardrobes, lots of odd bits of painting, a few bits of tiling, no doors on the under stairs cupboard, the airing cupboard has no door and is full of paint pots, the outside render needs painting, the radiator in our bedroom is not connected, the water main needs some work (though is water to the house).

I feel we could move in (as long as one bathroom/shower functioning). DH says it stinks of paint still, still loads of dust, not safe for DCs. ANd most importantly builder will take his eye off the project and it will take longer - quite possibly months to finish the odd bits.

I want to cry. I have spent the last few days sorting stuff playing furniture tetris in DC's rooms and want to be there. It already feels like home. I hate this static now. It is cold.

Is DH right? I think he probably is.

Oh poor you Sad

I can see both sides really. The paint smell will go quicker than the dust will that's for sure. We finished renovating in July and it's still settling Confused

Doors and stuff matter little really. I can understand your eagerness to get in.

i knew from the thread title this would be you. so sorry!

but your dh is right. once you move in all the finishing jobs will be difficult to do so you will not do them or compromise. stay out for as long as possible! another week or so will be SO worth it.

Give him a week deadline to get the 'little' jobs done and get the dust dealt with - but the weather has changed, you can't stay in a caravan if it starts snowing! Is the heating working?

I've always moved in "too early" and it does make a difference. You never get that Kevin McCloud moment when everything is finished and you can throw the doors open to your admiring public - it always ends up with little bits dragging on. Try and stay put so that you can really enjoy the finished project.

DH spoken to builder this morning....looks like we may be in tomorrow.....ohhhhhh lovely....so pleased. Still bits to finish but we trust builder's word (family friend and almost like a grandfather to our DC) so we are going with it. We have an outline of when stuff will be done.

Bed. Lovely bed. Bath.
