Do sewage works smell?

This is a stupid question isn't it? I shouldn't consider a house with a garden that backs onto one, should I? It should be an immediate dealbreaker, right?

Sigh. It's a bloody gorgeous 14th century manor house and I want it. The chimneys are fantastic.

They stink to high heaven.

yes they do.

There is one near to the A46 and often it smells in the car like someone has farted - this is with the windows closed. The plant is not that near and there are houses in closer proximity.

Yes they do. And as yet I don't think they've found a way to deal with it. Where I live a luxury housing development is being built right next to one. Apparently they will solve the problem of the sewage works smell, but 2 years on and they haven't managed it.

That said it will make the house better value for money as it will have reduced the asking price. Also depending on which way the wind normally blows you might not smell it too often.

I went to school next to one for 8 years. It was worse in summer, but not really bad.

I would use it to get a nice house at a low price. Grin

Yes, there is a village near one about 5 miles from here, and the whole place stinks. But the houses are cheap. You can smell the place from the motorway.

According to someone that used to live there, after a while you can't smell it any more. But of course anyone that visits you will be able to smell it.

I used to work for one and they absolutely stink. People 6 miles away used to complain about the smell when the wind changed direction. If the people who own the house tell you it doesn't smell they are lying, visit in the summer when it stinks to high heaven and there are flies everywhere !!

Yes. Where I work has one a good half mile away or more across a massive Retail Park. There's a few restaurants, a bowling alley, a DFS and a massive ASDA, never mind roads and carparks between us and it, and when the wind is the wrong right direction, it is rank. During the summer there's always a faint miasma of something.

I can't understand how anyone can choose to live around there.

We live on an estate right next to one, it smells about 3-4 days a year when they move the cake, but other than that its fine.

The sewage works where I live is build deep underground and never smells. It is a triumph of engineering and has sealed "vats" where the sewage goes. My Dad did some work there (he was in the building trade) and said it is incredible

So I guess it depends how modern it is and how well built. Ours in right in the middle of a very upmarket residential area

I went on a field trip to one during my MSc. It stank. I stank for days afterwards, despite showering until I was red. I stank of farts. I seriously wouldn't want to live near one. Sorry. Sad

Ivykaty do you mean the one at wanlip? My dh does work for severn trent and often has meetings there! He says it stinks far worse actually on site but those there all the time dont notice it anymore.

Its a saying in our house for foul smells.
'who smells like wanlip?'

My parents live near sewage works and you rarely smell them. There are maybe a couple of days in the summer when you get a faint whiff but that is it.

Went there today for a sniff around. It didn't smell. I love the house. Didn't do a viewing, but from outside it's just as gorgeous as the photos. The location is great too - well apart from the damn sewage farm obviously. I still want it. Aargh.

I used to work at one and only noticed it for the first week.

That was ten years ago and even now when I walk the dog past one which is down the road I dont smell anything. So either the one near medoesnt smell or I have now got a permanent immunity to the smell.

we live miles away from one but as you drive past you can smell it, its not good....and quite often in the local paper there are stories about people who live nearby complaining about the smell and the water company apologising....

i wouldnt live near one at all.

there is one near to where i work, it absolutely reeks, and right opposite are the cutest little pretty houses, and i wouldnt live there for all the tea in china!
