Fallen in love with Harvey jones linear kitchen but not the price tag. Anyone seen similar??

We need a new kitchen in our (hopefully) new house. Ive had white high gloss before in a previous house but am a bit worried it's going to start to look dated (sorry I have just offended all white gloss kitchen owners). I quite like shaker kitchens but they are a bit too country kitchen looking for my tastes and wouldnt really suit the house.

I love love love the Harvey jones LINEAR range. It's solidwood but clean lines instead of inset bits and looks sort of like a matt version of high gloss IYSWIM so I love it.

The other one I like is the handleless bulthaup as it's more of a Matt finish without looking melamine-y but that is waaaaayy out of price range

Can anyone help/ seen anything similar?

I know the one you mean and I agree its very stylish (also on my shortlist for when we finally replace our kitchen).
It might be worth showing the range to local joiners to see if they can copy the look for you, this often works out cheaper than buying from a big company.

I think I did see a vaguely similar design in my Benchmarx catalogue but cant put my hands on it at the mo, but worth a gander.

Thank you that's very helpful
I will look into both of those options

Do you have any other styles that you really like?

I'm thinking of having our kitchen made locally and will probably go for framed doors, but like you I like the flat door of the linear so will probably choose that rather than one with grooves in it (also think its easier to keep a flat door clean, no dust traps).

I quite like the Benchmarx framed doors

and this new unframed style

I also think that most IKEA kitchens look very good given their low prices, but our kitchen is an odd shape so we probably do need to have it made to order.

Byw, this is the range I was thinking of, but its high gloss rather than matt and not solid wood, so not really that close to the Linear after all, sadly.

Also love Roundhouse kitchens but they are even more ££ than Harvey Jones!

I will be getting my kitchen done by the joiners that the local builders use to supply kitchens etc. They did my last kitchen, fitted, solid wood doors, at the same price that an ikea flat pack would have cost, uninstalled. They have since done two friends kitchens (in same town) and my parents' new kitchen (travelling 200 miles - still cheaper than local). You can also get it custom built for the space that way too, so no difficult spaces left.

mistlethrush - sounds great. can i ask the name of the joiners?

roundhouse - yummm. oh well one day!

like the 3rd benchmarx one very much indeed, but not the gloss bit sadly. not keen on the ridging bit on the wooden ones above.

is so tough!

Mistelthrush - could I have details of your joiner too please?

Have looked at the Benchmarx painted kitchens and thought they looked very good. Their shaker ones actually look like they have been painted, unlike the Second Nature ones, whichdon't really look like wood.

That's interesting I was going to look at second nature. Maybe I won't bother

The aim is to get an expensive looking kitchen dead cheap!

A friend used buildbase wooden units which he painted- looks good.

Too hard for me to give you a price - they have a few ranges with matt white handleless, a budget one, still looks good and the bells and whistles Nextline which comes in about a third more.

Second Nature and Benchmarx use the same doors Confused though.
What did you mean about the "ridged bit" is it that unnecessary groove between the panels?

You could also buy cabinets from any online supplier and get someone like www.cjftrading.co.uk/ to fabricate the flat door in a face frame. I phoned them up for a sample and they were really helpful.

Have you had a look at Alno (www.alno.co.uk/) and neptune (www.neptune.co.uk/)? High style at a more affordable price

Report
artyjools · 26/11/2011 17:45

Mammonite - maybe they do use the same doors, but looking at the painted ones, the Benchmarx ones had a grain effect and had more of an appearance of being hand painted (IMO)than the second natures ones. Perhaps each company has its own paint spraying procedures or maybe it was just those partcular doors. The second natures ones are well worth looking at though and I haven't yet made up my mind. Will probably get quotes from several different companies.

Going to look up alno and neptune now!

Good luck in your search, hope you manage to make a decision quicker than I do Grin.

There was a thread on another forum I picked up that bit of kitchen trivia so who knows?

Artej I've PMd you.

The thing I like about the company I've used is that the quality is better than the flat packs you can get and the kitchen is purpose built for your needs - so, for instance, all my wall cupboards were an inch wider than standard so that dinner plates would go in flat, and shelves came to the outside edge of the shelf, without the gap that most upper shelves have. They also went full height right to the ceiling so no gap and more shelves. And base cabinets went back to the wall rather than being built out. And it was precisely fitted - so that you could split the gap you had into say 3 to get equal sized cupboards rather than having to use the standard sizes available.

More helpful info- mumsnet is fab!

Will def look into all suggested

The ridged bit is difficult to explain and can't link as on phone but basically the Harvey jones linear collection have completely flat wooden doors and all the shaker/other wooden doors have an inset bit. I prefer them completely flat.

Do you think you could get ikea carcasses and get that company ctf to make doors?

Thank you for your PM, Mistlethrush. I like the sound of your joiners very much, but we are south of London, so I think they are too far away from us. What a shame.
