collapsed chain

just posted this on another thread, but i though that instead of piggybacking onto someone else's thread i'd open my own...

Sad
we thought we had sold (were getting close to exchange). relatively short chain. now we have lost our buyers, because they've lost theirs... they have of a sudden found another house they'd rather buy. why on earth could they not have come up with that at an earlier stage???
upward chain is only house we are buying. anyone ever heard of a short chain waiting for another to sell?? was thinking of ringing our sellers and asking if they'd consider doing this, as agents would never do (they'd rather get us all on the market again for a reduced price...) it just seems like such a shame of all the legal work we've done to get this far...

I think it's worth an ask -it depends on how desperate they are to sell I suppose

it's not much fun showing your house and they might not want to start doing it again if they thought they had sold so they may agree, even if it is just for a fixed period of time

and asking costs nothing :-)

Yes I've certainly heard of this. However the upwards chain is usually only willing to wait a few weeks or so for the "bottom" buyer in the chain to get a new buyer. But it's certainly worth a try.

Sorry to hear that. :( You can only ask, but to be honest if that was me id still begin re marketing my property whilst hoping the buyers would sort something out. You've got to think of yourselves in all this..

thanks for the messages.
yes we are all gutted. on positive side: we got our seller to agree to wait for a while before putting his house back on. we went on again ourselves today, hoping to get another chain in place asap. we are already getting three viewings tomorrow!

We had the same situation. Went off market for a month to give our buyer a little more time, (and give a then pregnant me with toddler a break from sodding perpetual tidying!) She still didn't sell, so her survey on ours was a waste and we had to go through more viewings to then finally (We hope) sell.
Previous to this our buyer pulled out and the house we were buying was rented out for 6 months to give us time to sell. We didn't do it in time, so we lost that one.
HOUSE SELLING AND BUYING IS CRAP!!! Good luck. Wish it could all be chain free somehow. It only take one pain in the arse to change their plans, idea etc and the whole thing comes falling down. W

MofS - I hope things work out for you. I don't quite understand what you want to do here but can empathise with the 'not looking like it's going to happen' scenario.
