Help needed - Getting rid of brown doors

I am so sick of our brown doors and stairs. How do I kill the brown paint and get them white?
Am not very good at DIY so no sanding machines please! Wink

For the doors, I'd just replace them tbh. You can get decent white internal doors for about £20-30 from any place like B & Q. Not so sure about the stairs. Paint would chip like mad I would guess.

Just paint them with an undercoat and then use gloss or whatever paint you prefer.
Maybe the stairs will look ok once you have changed the colour of the doors.
All the doors were brown when we moved inthis house last year. Hideous 70s brown doors like you see in doctor's surgeries. There are 10 altogether. I can't afford to replace them- doors, hinges, door handles- all adds up. I have undercoated some and painted some, some all still brown, but they will all be white eventually.
I don't use gloss as it makes me ill. I use a water based paint for wood- it's quick drying and doesn't smell strong like gloss. The brushes are easier to wash too.

Thanks to both of you. I can't really afford to replace and also one of them is the kitchen/garage door which is a specially heavy fire door.
Think I'll go with the idea of undercoat followed by waterbased paint for wood as gloss paint gives my husband an allergic reaction.
The stairs will have to wait until the cat passes away Sad as we can't have a new stair carpet until she has stopped scratching hell out of it.
