Blackboard paint

Has anybody used it? I'd like to paint a small wall in the kitchen with blackboard paint but have some misgivings. I'm not even sure what they are, but I think mainly how do you get rid of it if you no longer want it - can you just paint over it?

Only used it on blackboards (to renew the surface) so no idea if it could be painted over - but can't see why not, just take a few more layers.

My misgivings would be that chalk is very, um chalky, and I've read on other forums (apartmenttherapy.com) that people regret it because they end up with chalk everywhere. (For intance, on their sleeves if they brush past it while walking by. Or on the floor from the pieces of chalk crumbling.) I love the look though.

A friend of mine has painted the inside of her front door with it, which works well - the dust isn't a problem because it's a high traffic area so needs a regular mopping anyway, and it's quite handy for 'DON'T FORGET TO SCREW HEAD ON' sort of messages as well as doodling.

I love the look too.

I wonder if it is possible to get chalk that doesn't 'shed' - what do they use to write those nice smooth blackboard signs in restaurants?



I reckon you could just paint over it - I'd probably just do a coat or two of cheap PBW first before any other colour.

DD has a section of her bedroom wall painted in blackboard paint. We did it over several layers of magnetic paint so she has the advantage of a space she can draw and put magnets on too.

To be fair, we painted a spot on her wall which will need replastering eventually, so the issue of can you paint over it is not one we really considered.

Magnetic paint! I had no idea there was such a thing - what a brilliant idea and would be really handy in the kitchen.

I did about metre square in kitchen with International magnetic blackboard paint (got it from Homebase.
I framed it with a massive thick silver frame (no more nails it on), the lip means the chalk dust doesn't fall on the floor and you have somewhere to rest the chalks.
