american fridge freezers - good ones!

Hi, am looking to buy a black american fridge freezer. Saw a daewoo one but mother said it is not that good - reviews on it good.
I have no kitchen at the moment and its a nightmareSad.
Really need some ideas. And do I get one with outside water and ice maker. I think I would rather not as kids would constantly be pressing it and ice shooting across the room. Rally would appreciate some ideas. Limited budget too after spending fortune on kitchen.

we got
"this daewoo" paid extra for taking the old one away and getting it installed. came with a 2 year guarantee at the time!

it has no fancy water dispenser thingy so more internal space and no need to get plumbing in which we didn't have!

would totally recommend, looks great and has totally done the job, so much better than our old 50:50

DH and I recently rented a US flat with an american fridge freezer (natch). The water that came out tasted absolutely horrible - we suspected that if they're not used / cleaned out regularly, something goes somewhat wrong with them. So I wouldn't recommend the water dispenser.

I have to say that we found that having the huge fridge just encouraged stuff to rot at the back.

we have an ice-cube maker thing and until i read this thread i'd forgotten how convenient it is. the water thing broke and i don't miss that. you need plumbing for the icemaker. they do take up quite a lot of the freezer - so depends how important freezer space is.

i like having a huge fridge - but then we've quite a large family who like lots of food and i don't shop often.

We have this one

www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/daewoo-frsu20icb-american-style-fridge-freezer-black-02415012-pdt.html

Didn't go for the ice and water thing as it took up to much room in the freezer. We are a family of 5 and find it big enough for us. I shop week to week rather than monthly. I love having the huge fridge as we buy a lot of fresh stuff and it seems to keep stuff a lot fresher for longer than any other fridge I have had.

I've had an LG one for about 3 years with no problems.

We didn't get an ice/water one as

They have to be plumbed in and our pipes are at the far side of the kitchen.

Takes up too much room inside the freezer.

We live in Scotland and the tap water is freezing cold and tastes great.

I have a Samsung Cooltech which has the freezer above and not beside, but is very wide. It has been great and I've had it for about 7 years now. It's survived being moved abroad as well and is still going strong.

ImASlatternGetMeOutOfHere that is exactly the same one I have been looking at. How long have you had yours?
We too are a family of 5 - it looks great.
Really didn't want to get one with ice and water on front, so this looks ideal.

we have a samsung one- bought it 2 years ago for around £700.

it has a child lock for the water/ice function which may come in handy as the 3 year old can very nearly reach.

cant fault it in any way. it takes 5 6pint containers of milk plus every thing else the 5 of us need. i held onto our original freezer because i was really worried that the freezer wouldnt be big enough but it is fine for our needs, and you can see what is in there!

Samsung - it's brilliant and I really can't fault their customer service - they've sent someone out twice to check a POTENTIAL fault. Would definitely buy Samsung again.

I have a Samsung RS21 and it is utterly shite. Would never EVER touch one again. Was great for the first couple of years but crap thereafter.

The water lever broke. Fixed but was warned that taking the control panel off often snaps the clips necessitating an expensive part. Thankfully this was fine.

Ice lever broke. Can't be arsed to fix this due to control panel issue above.

Water doesn't work. Can't be arsed to fix now as I'm going to buy a proper American fridge freezer of better quality.

It had the design fault that made it sold like a helicopter taking off.

As I said, it was fine and I loved it but now it is a pile of rubbish. Sizewise, it's fine, it looks nice but it is cheap and it shows.

Having had the water an ice dispensers, I wouldn't want to be without them again.

Check you can get it into the kitchen. DS had great fun last year delivering one when he worked for JL. Not only the door into the kitchen had to come off, so also did the door frame (and a lot of plaster work).

Just to confuse you further... we have a newer model samsung, and it is fantastic. No ice/water thing as it is a long way from water supply and we wanted more aspace in the freezer. I love it.
