6/7 seater cars - how much boot space do you sacrifice?

dh and I are considering a new car. We need a very big boot, but also need more than the standard 5 seats.

What have you got and how big is your boot? Top of my list at the moment is the Multipla, FIL has one and loves it but dh isn't keen on how it looks.

We had the same thing as needed room for the dog in the boot. The only thing we found that suited was the Toyota Previa, but is a bus!

Do you always need more than the 5 seats i.e. would you consider a Zafira or Touran where the seats fold away into the floor? Boot space is pretty decent when seats folded away but miniscule when seats are up.

We have the Citroen C8 (which I think is the same as the Multipla) and the boot space is OK for a standard MPV. It's tiny compared to an estate car though. If you only need 6 seats, you can remove one, or fold it back, and increase your boot space dramatically.

If you tell us what you need the boot space for, we may be able to help you more specifically.

We have a toyota preavia.....massive boot
Previously had a renault espace...tiny boot
Friend has a chrysler grand voyager....HUGE BOOT!!

Admittedly tho, all feel very much buslike when first driving them, but I now feel very vunerable in normal size cars, so not caring anymore!!

we need the big boot for going to France, which is when we also need the extra seat so that dd can take a mate!

Not just buying it for one trip a year tho' - we very often find ourselves trying to squash 6 into our cavalier.

But would the both be combined? eg going to france with an extra passenger?

I wouldn't do the Multipla as the boot is ALWAYS tiny, but one with teh seats in or out, giving extra space when needed like the Zafera or Touran. Or what about the espace?

Ameriscot2005 Mon 04-Apr-05 14:08:48

If 6 is your maximum number of passengers, you should be fine if you take the extra seat out completely. You could also get a roof box.

I know you must be worrying about where to put the booze though .

we can get a wheelchair for ds2 and some bags of shopping in the boot of our honda shuttle

piffle Mon 04-Apr-05 20:22:24

we have a peugeot 307 sw, it can take 7 seats but you whip out 5 of them if needed, so it's flexible seating, cannot fit an awful lot in with all 7 seats in though.
Ds's teacher has a multipla and says she hates it!

I have always thought it strange that the more passengers a car can carry the less boot space it has! Surely you would need more because there are more people needing space for their luggage etc!

i have a renault grand scenic. the boot in it is tiny with 7 seats up. but the back 2 seats fold into the floor, so i often have one up and one down, the pram at one side and the child at the other. hth

Hi, lili. We used to have a Toyota Space Cruiser - not Land Cruiser, sadly! - which was the predecessor of the Previa, and even with all the seats up it had a decent space in the boot; with half of the back row folded away it had masses and with the whole back row away we could get 3 or 4 kids bikes in. I think the Previa is the same, and the Grand Espace and Grand Voyager are similar. (Longer wheelbase than the others.) But - I think - you need the cheapest version of the Previa, or anyway the 8 seater, if you get upmarket 7 seater it has 2 proper separate seats in the back (not a split bench) and they have to be removed instead of folding to the side which is a PITA.

We had to get rid because it was quite old and wonky and kept costing 000's to get through MOT but we still miss it. Definitely consider a Previa (get diesel though).

NB with half rear bench folded away you can still seat 6 comfortably.

What about getting a roof box for those long journeys where you need loads of stuff for a lot of people?

lilibet Wed 06-Apr-05 14:40:08

We already use a box! We go to France in a cavalier with a roof box and you couldn't get another thing in the car - perhpas we take too much!!

But once you have bedding and towels for 5 people there isn't that much room for anything else!

I couldn't find anywhere on the net that gave me information on which 7 seater cars were available to buy in the UK. Not only that, when you try and find out if a car has 7 seats from all the different Car manufacturer websites the information is hidden/ or you get bored of the flashy websites downloading... I found and bought a Citreon Grand Picasso.. Cheapest Car tax and good on fuel.. Mind you it will probably conk out after 3 years. !! grin

The newer ones are less ugly.. What about a Honda FRV.. They've got 6 seats and loads of boot space...

We have a multipla, we can fit a phil and teds double pushchair and a weeks grocery shopping in the boot with a bit of stacking

aarghhelp Sun 04-Oct-09 18:49:56

We have a volvo v70, you can put seats in the boot, up to 7 people, good load carrier, v. safe and we got a good deal 2nd hand.
