buying a new mattress - where to start?

We've decided we really need a new mattress as our old one is giving me backache and noticably sags so you can see 2 obvious dips in it! I'm also pregnant and have SPD so would like to be as comfy as possible.

The problem is we don't have masses of money (does anyone these days though).

Where do you start buying a matress? There are just loads and loads of different types. Does it really help to 'try' them first as ours seems fine if you only lie on it for a minute or two. Would it be mad to get one from argos as they are on sale at the moment but this would mean not trying it first?

Thanks

I sat on loads of different mattresses in shops and still didn't know what to get, cos like you say, most feel fine if you're only on them for a minute!

In the end I just got one from argos, you can always return it if you dont like the look of it when it arrives. I got a cushion-top silentnight one, and it's fantantic (I'm pregnant too with painfull hips).

You have to both try one at the same time.

We bought a new one a couple of months ago (pocket sprung with memory foam on top) and it is superb -I've never slept so well smile.

It took lots of trawling around trying different ones -we'd both lie on it together and take it in turns to turn over to see if we distubed the other person as this was a big problem with the old one
