Need to buy a toaster soonish. Any tips gratefuly received.

Habbibu Sun 14-Sep-08 10:13:55

Simpler the better - less to go wrong. Wide slots so you can have nice thick toast. Let me look at Which and get back to you - hang on...

spudcounter Sun 14-Sep-08 10:15:08

oh thanks...that'd be really useful as we plan to go out in the next half hr to buy one.

ivykaty44 Sun 14-Sep-08 10:15:43

Agree wide slots, so fresh cut wonky bread doesn't burn wink Unless you can cut the perfect slice.

Four slot and push button to pop the toast up if burning.

psychomum5 Sun 14-Sep-08 10:16:00

hwo many people in you house, or rather, how many slices would you be needing to do at the same time if all of you had toast??

that would make a difference on which toaster IMHO.

FairLadyRantALot Sun 14-Sep-08 10:16:38

To me a Toaster is a Toaster....they are all the same really, lol....
but yeah, the less gimmicks the less can go wrong!

Cappuccino Sun 14-Sep-08 10:16:50

oh fgs it is a toaster

you are looking for something that heats your toast

uptomyeyes Sun 14-Sep-08 10:18:52

Is there any toaster other than Dualit??

Mine is 10 years old and unlikely to give up anytime soon. No electonics or complicated buttons to go wrong. Wide slots - a choice of 2,3 or 4 slots. You can also buy a sandwich cage so that you can make toasted sandwiches in the toaster. A handy pull out crumb catcher so that you don't have to turn the toaster upside down to empty it.

ivykaty44 Sun 14-Sep-08 10:19:55

No she is looking for something to toast her bread wink

I have a Dualit, and it's great - totally mechanical timer etc so very few electrical things to go wrong, and they replace lots of parts.

spudcounter Sun 14-Sep-08 10:21:31

yeah cappucino but you see I've had my fingers burnt before..bought a very basic tesco model last year for 4 quid and it's packed up. I seem to recall that lots of toasters have a crumb tray but they were fiddly to pull out.

Up2myeyes Dualit? aren't they the really expensive ones? how much are we looking at?

Cappuccino Sun 14-Sep-08 10:22:37

of course it packed up

it was four quid

spudcounter Sun 14-Sep-08 10:22:44

cheers habbibu, that's great. I really appreciate it.

Cappuccino Sun 14-Sep-08 10:23:28

"is there any other toaster than Dualit?"

ponce alert

Habbibu Sun 14-Sep-08 10:24:06

No problem. Leave her alone, Capp, you old meanie. I need people to justify my Which subscription...

uptomyeyes Sun 14-Sep-08 10:27:52

The original ones are expensive - I recently bought my parents one for circa £100. But they have brought out a new model - see Habbibu's list. Same principles but slightly smaller casing I think. I can only compare to my parents who have gone through 4 (pretty good) toasters in the time I have had mine.

I bought mine with John Lewis vouchers I was given from work when I went on Mat leave with DS1 - I was meant to "buy something for the baby" - well he has had his fair share of toast and crumpets from it over time!

uptomyeyes Sun 14-Sep-08 10:28:53

Capp - it's a way of life - ponce or not grin

psychomum5 Sun 14-Sep-08 10:32:29

I have a breville toaster, and it works very well thanks.

I would not spend more than £30 tho on any toaster tho now, not since DS2 decided that taosting jigsaw pieces was a fun pass-timehmm!

we went thro around 4 toasters because of jigsaw pieces. ooh, and pens<<sigh>>........him toasting Po from the tellytubbies was the most memorable tho!

Po melted

I just bought a kenwood toaster with two long slots - the one which is chrome with a brushed steel panel on the side, £29-99 on Amazon.

It's OK. Sings the custs round the edge of the bread, for some reason, and doesn't pop upbut bleeps and there is a manual lift-up mechanism.

I wish we had lashed out on the Dualit Lite, tbh.

Most inexpensive toasters are a bit hideous, imo.

Cappuccino Sun 14-Sep-08 10:45:32

I'm just a bit gobsmacked at this thread

we got ours for £25 in a box with a matching kettle

there is absolutely nothing wrong with it

Habbibu Sun 14-Sep-08 10:53:21

ours was like that, Capp. And then it died a hideous death...

Cappuccino Sun 14-Sep-08 11:05:40

yes true it might die someday

everything dies

but I have been very happy with it for a good long time so far

Habbibu Sun 14-Sep-08 11:06:53

lord, a philosophical toaster thread. Our kettle from that combo still works, mind. It whistles, which is odd for an electric kettle.

Blu Sun 14-Sep-08 11:08:55

It toasts therefore it is.
