Was an alphabet flip chart / flash cards a silly thing to buy dd?

I promise I didn't buy it in a competitive parent sort of way. She just seemed to like a counting one she found in a soft play place a couple of weeks ago, and when I saw the alphabet one I bought it for her.

Now I've just realised that I think alphabet and reading is taught in a totally different way to when I was at school, and I don't want to tell her all wrong and make her muddled when she finally does come to learn it.

You can laugh at me a bit if you like.

What would you do?

how old is she.

i find the whole phonics thing v. stressful (how do you say u and x?) but then i wasn't exactly v. good at the whole spelling alphabet thing at school.

dd was playing a phonics game on the computer and i found myself sucked and going 'oh is that why it sounds like that.'

She's 2.

We did makaton signing from 6 months for a year so I've done phonics (she mostly hit the radiator at the back of the class with a bean shaker grin). I wonder if it's the same?
