Loo rolls banned in arts classes

Is it just my daughters school, or are loo rolls now generally forbidden as art materials because they are unhygenic?

THis has been aroudn for a while now. We used to zap them in the microwave in the Nursery but now we don't use them at all - a little OTT invho.

Sadly this is true and bonkers . When I asked WHY? I was looked at as if it were I who had lost the plot completely but there you go. Someone is paid to think up all these rules ya know so we don't want to see anyone out of a job do we?

It isn't the norm here. Dd2's class used them as dinosaur legs last week. Somehow they are all still alive and kicking (the children, not the legs, most of which fell off because of rubbish quality sticky tape).

was the same when mine were little and eldest is 14 - also egg boxes. Sometimes they would be zapped in the microwave though!

Been reading this blog on outdoor education for a while and the page linked has a link to the health and safety executive saying this is a myth.

schools/businesses often ban things on "health and safety grounds" when in fact the h&s executive have never said those things are a problem.
It's the same as all the rules the EU supposedly force on us - mostly fabricated/taken out of all context/proportion by the red tops.

There is no health risk or reason not to use loo rolls (as long as they are clean) just an ott reaction by some schools that has since been cleared up.

I defy anyone to watch this teachers.tv video, which explains how bacteria spray 2 metres or more when a toilet is flushed without the lid down, and carry on using loo rolls in Art/DT.

I am not!
I am quite sensible (I think). But ever since seeing this video whilst teaching micro-organisms to Y6, I have preferred not to use loo rolls for arty things. Or keep my toothbrush near the toilet!

Not banned at the infant school I work at.

In the last few weeks I have used them to make astronauts, lighthouses and musical instruments.

Always have been banned where I work, Ive heard about microwaving them but always thought they might set on fire !
