Child with 'Slow Processing' - what does this mean?

I just heard back from our friend who is a dyslexia specialist. She didn't say much apart from she will see ds soon and from what I have described, it sounds like 'slow processing' to her.

I don't know what to think about that. I googled it and it seems to be mentioned in context with ADHD and dyslexia, but there also seem to be auditory and visual versions of it...I say 'it' but is it a disorder, a learning disability, something he will grow out of...?

Worst of all I'm starting to think I should have been much kinder when he 'wasn't listening' all these years.

he's 6 btw.

Can't say exactly what she meant but usually the brain will do millions of things in fraction of a second... including filtering out all the sensory information that is not most important at that moment, focus on what is important, fire off the right neural networks to do whatever is going on (thoughts/feelings/actions whatever) as well as deal with the basic functions of being alive.

When it works properly we are not even aware of it. Sometimes the brain just takes longer to sort the information and come up with the right response so eg. some people are less aware of where their body is in space so can find it hard to move around without bumping or falling ie 'being clumsy'.

My ds has sensory processing problems- whenever had paed assessment when small they ask him a question I knew he could answer but he would look like a rabbit in the headlights, get a cross on the sheet then a few minutes later come out with the right answer.
