literacy in year 4?

We moved to Germany from england in March and dd (8) is coping really well with school here but her class will start to learn english this year - imagine dd might be a bit fed up while the kids learn english from scratch.

Just wondered if i could provide her with something that would be similar to what she would be doing in y4 for literacy - just reading a book wouldnt be a challenge to her - she's a proper bookworm! i was thinking of some kind of workbook that might involve some comprehension/vocabulary etc.

any ideas welcome!

How is her German? Could her time be better spent brushing up on those skills, or is she bilingual?

What does her teacher suggest? My bi-lingual niece absolutely adored being the "teacher's helper" in year 7 when her classmates started Spanish from scratch!

she doesnt go back until tues - i was just trying to be prepared! dd would quite happily go along with the class even though she knew the words - just wanted her challenged during that lesson too!

English lecturer here. She will be much better off reading real books than messing about with crappy workbooks. They have NO educational merit, they are just parasitic on the worst aspects of the NC.

Encourage her to read widely - fiction and non-fiction, a variety of authors and genres. Get her to go beyond her comfort zone and read things that aren't immediately appealing, or that she finds challenging. If you really want her to do something other than read, get her to keep a reading journal and write things in it in response to the books she reads.

At that age, though, the best thing she can do for her literacy is just read, honest!

sorry to hijack, canella but I was just interested in campergirls post

my ds(9) - just gone into y5 - is convinced he 'can't do' literacy - whenever he's asked to write anything he moans and groans and moves at a snail's pace

however, he devours books - fiction, non-fiction, comics, newspapers, but especially fiction - he's constantly reading and it's one of his absolute top favourite things to do

I keep on thinking it must spill over into his literacy output at some point - but not yet - any ideas when/if it will?
