So what do they actually learn in reception?

DS1 is just about to start and I really have no clue what they actually do. Is it mostly playing, especially in the first term when most of the children are only part-time? Or will they start teaching them to read and do sums?

How to share, take turns, listen for extended periods, talk to adults and peers. Linking letter sounds to letter shapes, Numbers (the 'five-ness' of 5 etc) Knowledge and understanding of the world comparing & contrasting eg sand and water, I could go on and on and on

Reception is great and in the best classes every activity is a rich learening experience even if it looks to the casual observer as if they were 'jsu playing'

I would also like to say that playing and exploring is the best way to learn they learn in reception without them knowing they are learning.

I wouldnt worry just aso long as your child is happy.
