So if a child who had already done reception would they stay with reception kids instesd of year one kids?

Some schools do this where their intakes are small.

So a child would still move up to Year 1 but may do some class work eg literacy and numeracy with reception children if they were younger or maybe less able.

yes, ours is a v small village school, the years mix and match according to intake. So DS was in reception with yr 1 kids (class 1). then half of yr 1 moved up to class 2 (DS was in the older half). then he was yr 2 in class 2 with yr 3. Next yr he's yr3 in class 2 with yr 2s coming up. fortunately class 2 teacher is a marvel, otherwise this wouldn't work: 3 yrs with same teacher.
