I need a Roald Dahl inspired costume for Friday - for me!

I was considering The Witches as I have a costume from Halloween, but have remembered that The Witches don't look like a normal witch! So that is out.

World Book Day is this week and on Friday everyone (pupils and staff) has to go to school dressed as a Roald Dahl character.

What on earth can I wear bearing in mind I don;t want to go spending lots of money and have limited time available between now and then.

Please help!

I have to go in my PJs the week after Why did I think going into primary schools would be a good thing?

Giant peach. Bash a box about, make arm and leg holes, paint orange, green scarf for leaf.

Sympathies. I've got to go in as the crocodile in Peter Pan on Friday and Dolly Parton the week after

hula, you can only be a witch if you're bald
turn up in huuuuge flannelet nightie and be grandma Josephine or whoever - charlie and the chocolate factory

'matilda' would be hilarious

what about 'red riding hood' from the revolting rhymes, make sure you have a wolfskin coat and a pistol in your knickers

I know - and I think shaving my head is beyond the call of duty; as it chopping my toes off!

I did think of Little Red Riding Hood but assume pistols are probably not allowed in schools these days

What does Matild wear?

I hate dress up so much!!!

spider from inside the peach? dress all in black, 4 extra legs from stuffed tights, make big eyes on a headband?

Adult characteres might be easier.

What about that awful teacher in Matilda? Hair in bun, glasses, starchy clothes? Aunt Sponge/Aunt Spiker? Cross-dress as Willie Wonka?

If it's not obvious who you are you could make an artistic badge!

goldilocks plus porridge, chair and sheet?

then again, mrs twit would be much more fun, unless you have a colleague that looks like this already

Willy Wonka? Long coat, boots, trousers, top hat, cane?

was also going to suggest mrs twit, there's a very detailed descriptive passage about her that would be fun to go through.

What about the Grandma of the little boy from The Witches? Amputated finger, a cigar... there are opportunities!

DS1 really hates any kind of dressing up so he went as George from George's Marvellous Medicine. He wore his own clothes (do you have any suitable clothes)a name badge saying George and I made a label for a big bottle saying "Marvellous Medicine, not for chickens or grandmas" and he was quite happy for minimal effort

My dd is going as Aunt Spiker for world book day. She LOVES Roald Dahl and thought that all the other girls in her class would go as Rainbow Fairies and she wants to be different (I'm very proud of this little bit of free thinking). She is wearing a very old fashioned lace and velvet dress, an old ladies hat and a pair of half moon reading specs.

DD is going as Sophie from the BFG, she is thrilled that she can wear her nightie to school!!!!!!!

If you can find the outfit, go as Miss Trunchbull from Matilda, she is very well descibed in the book as wearing hideous knickerbockers!!!!

Hulababy · 05/03/2009 18:34

Getting the outfit for most fo them was just so hard! Hence going for easy option.

Looking forward to seeing all the children

And yes, it is an infant school (up to Y2) so have to consider character.
