Want to email the nursery school - is this too PFBish or is it OK

My DS is due to start nursery school in the spring term (if it is still called that!) - April anyway! It's a school which has a year before the reception class where they take children once they are 3.

I am totally out of touch with anything school related and I want to send an email to the school secretary asking the following questions - are any of them not OK?

(DS has a place, but we have heard nothing at all to do with any aspect of it other than that).

Q1 Please let me know term dates (not on website)
Q2 Please let me know if DS should wear uniform, if so, what do I need to get
Q3 Is there anything I can do to prepare him either personally or academically

If I am honest, I want to be able to plan things practically (getting stuff etc, what days he's going). Would you have expected some information by now? I am embarassed at bugging someone who has work to do, but I really want to have a better idea of what's going on as it is less than 3 months away. Should I ask?

I would have thought that there would be a nursery visit for your ds so that you can both have a look round and leave ds for an hour or so

Teachers often do a home visit too so you can talk about private things or concerns

I would go to the school and ask what the norm is

They are all reasonable questions, not PFB at all. But are you sure there won't be some parents' evening/open day type event to get new parents up to speed? I know most schools do that before Reception proper starts - not sure re nursery. If not, then email - but Head rather than Secretary, who certainly won't be able to answer Q3.

lol ! I think you can reasonably ask for the summer term dates and if there is anything you need to know in advance, perhaps they will arrange a visit (maybe towards end fo March) at which you can ask your questions. Once you have visited you'll know re uniform etc.

you can get term dates once they start, will prob come home with lots of slips and papers that first day

uniform - call up about that

no no no!!!! at this age they are PLAYING, you don't have to prepare them for preschool/nursery

I would say you'd prob get stuff soon, or most likely after Feb half term. It's only just after xmas break

all perfectly respectable questions imho our school asked us to practise basic things like putting shoes/coats on and off, using the loo and washing hands etc. will he be having lunch at school? i'm not sure if they asked us to practise numbers and colours and to read to them before or after they started. it was all v low key but our school is like that (yay )

the Head won't really know about what they can do to prepare - they will prob have a 'Pre School Leader', that's the person to talk to.
