Y1 - writing - how much does your child do?

Do they do writing daily, do they do news weekly, do the just practice letter formation?
Just wondering if there is a norm really, ds1's writing is not great but the teacher (at parents evening) said it will improve. I asked if they wrote every day and she said no, they discuss and plan it and then have a writing splurge every few weeks.
I was slightly gob-smacked and need to go back to her on this, I can't believe he isn't writing (in some form) most days. I can't see how he can get better if he doesn't practice.

CS I don't really know how much writing dd does on a daily basis as she can never remember what she's done when I ask her. Typical. But I do see their writing books out on their tables in the morning at least twice a week so I presume they're doing something in there. Plus there's spellings, writing little books, etc.

Can you get him to practise at home a bit with you? Ask him to write your shopping list or send a letter rather than it being a chore.

I'm sure this depends a lot on the teacher. I went to parents evening on Wednesday, my dd2 has a young teacher who is very enthusiastic. She asks the children to do a writing task each day, most children write between a few words and a few sentences. Sometimes the writing is news, a story or a poem, sometimes it is labelling a diagram eg. parts of the body. My dd's writing is not particularly understandable, but the teacher seemed pleased, so I guess it is how it should be.

My dd seems to be doing well with this approach. However, I know there are other children in the class who are really struggling, especially some boys. I know that year 1 can be tough on some children (it was on dd1), so I am not sure that the amount of writing being done in class is necessarily a good thing.

thanks borh, been offline since I posted.
I don't really want him to have to practice at home, I think homework is inappropriate for infants, but if he is really only writing every couple of weeks at school I will need to.
Although he sat and wrote something this afternoon completely unprompted.
I'll have a chat with her when they go back.

I think Ds1 (Y1) writes daily TBH. He's always talking about what he's been writing about. They get them writing stories and stuff which sounds great.
