My ds was 6 in April he could not do number 2 or 4 in a whole day lt alone 15 mins.

Oops, just re-read their homework policy and it is 15-20 minutes allocation (mind you that takes week's allocation (4 nights) up to 80 mins., which is 20 mins over national guidelines methinks).

Still seems a lot in even 20 minutes.

DD1 is the same age:

1. They don't do sight words, but she probably could do this in 5mins or so.
   
   
2. Could probably do in less than 5 mins, but she's good with numbers.
   
   
3. Would take at least 20 minutes, longer if she couldn't be bothered.

   And if she got this much homework set for the next day, I'd have one grumpy girl on my hands. And there wouldn't be any time for anything else by the time we've also allowed for walking home, seeing friends/going to a club/going to the park, having a family tea and reading her a story. All of which I think are of substantially more value than most of this homework
   
   We get 10-15 minutes recommended reading a night (and we do it about 5 nights in 7), plus one worksheet in numeracy and one in literacy PER WEEK. It's up to her when she does them as long as they are done before the following week.

never in a million years would my six year old DS get through that.

He has one piece of numeracy homework, ten or 11 words to spell and his reading book (suggested home reading three times a week). They are given a week to do the words and the numeracy.

And I thought that was a lot.

dd aged 5.7 can do 1 2 and three. she is only on stage two ort, so obviously couldnt read it, but would make a fair attempt. she could happily copy out very neatly, 8 sentences.

ds1 is 6 next week, so y1. I think it would take him;

1. a minute - he would either recognise them or he wouldn't.
2. 5 minutes (tables he would have no idea of, but the subtraction he could do).
3. 15 mins +
4. 5 mins
5. 30 mins +

To have all that as homework for 1 night it totally unrealistic for yr2. I certainly wouldn't be asking him to do it all.

OK. This is what we have had:

Week 1

Tue - learn 6 spellings for Thursday test
Wed - Read 6-8 pages of school reading book (DD is allowed to do more if she wants)
Thu - Make up 10 sums where the answer =10
Fri - Write 4 sentences to tell teacher all about you.

Week 2

Mon - learn 6 spellings for Thursday test
Tue - Reading
Wed - 5 addition sums, based on work done in class
Thu - Punctuate (add cap letter/full stops) to 4 sentences
Fri - Write at least 2 sentences about a parent's favourite childhood toy

Week 3

Mon - learn 6 spellings for Thursday test
Tue - Reading
Wed - 5 subtractio sums, based on work done in class
Thu - Write about what clothes youa re going to wear on Friday's school trip, and say why you have chosen them
Fri - Draw a picture of your favourite sculpture; draw the area around it (school trip this day to local sculpture park)

So, each individual homework take 5-10 min depending on how much they chose to write on the literacy days. More than enough for a Y2 child IMO.

Yes, DD could do more and in more limited time - but what is the point?

They are 6y, still in infant school. Homework should, at this age, by just getting used to the idea of doing homework and working independently, and to consolidate class-based learning. It should be very brief and take just minutes - at 6y childrn should have lots of time to play and relax every evening.

Refuse. That's just silly. My ds is 7 and very bright and could do 1 2 3 and 4 in 10 minutes, but would take a good 15 minutes to do 5. He's in year 3, and I know for a fact that there are plenty of children in his class who couldn't do most of that if, as my mother would say, "You asked with both hands for a fortnight"

Um - my DS is in Y2 at an independent prep school and he has nothing like that - just reading every night and spellings for the week.

At a sprint, with me nagging all the way, DS might just make that in 20 minutes but not every night and only because he would find 1,2 and the learning bit of 3 very easy.

My dd in Year 3 was set for her homework - 10 sentences to rewrite with correct capitals. Homework said to spend no longer than 30mins doing it even if you don't finish - so she only managed 5 sentences. Plus she had to read (as many/few pages as she wanted in her book).

Definetly too much.

Copying the 8 sentences would take at least 15 minutes for my DS, just 7 and in Y3. If it's all for one night, it's too much.
