In September 1979, my lovely mother wore a gray Country Casuals skirt and trouser suit with green floral blouse to escort me to my first day at school. What will you wear?

Bear in mind, her blouse carefully co-ordinated with my bottle greeen uniform, so the photos are lovely! Inasmuch as photos from 1979 of a wee girl with a dreadful coos-lick in her hair ever can be!!

Does the discerning mother wear a special outfit for her darling starting out at school? Or do you regret pitching up in whatever you laid your hands on and having the phots to boot?

I had had dd3 2 days before so I was still quite puffy and round. Never thought about it to be honest! Pics are mostly of dd1 and her little sisters, not of the 2 of us.

To be honest, I was too concerned with making sure she was wearing all the right gear and we got there in plenty of time. I do not feature in any photos! Your mum sounds very stylish, though!

GrapeJelly Tue 19-Aug-08 21:47:07

Didn't she look a bit odd wearing a skirt AND trousers, though?

Think I was behind the camera! Do wear waterproof mascara and sunglasses regardless of what else you may wear. And get your hair done

Blimey I feel old, I was starting secondary school in Sept 1979!

ChasingSquirrels Tue 19-Aug-08 21:51:42

I didn't take him, I went to work and my mum took him.

JackieNo Tue 19-Aug-08 21:51:59

We didn't take any photos that included me - just DD (and will be just DS and some of DD and DS when he starts).

Waswondering Tue 19-Aug-08 22:00:39

blush - sorry for typo!! That was a skirt suit.

I'm not sure my mother ever wore trousers in 1979!!

I collected my daughter from nursery on my bike in navy waterproofs and a glow in the dark jacket. Her classmate asked his Dad was I postman pat. So i know what I wont be wearing. Your Mum sounds lovely.

Sandyballs, you feel old, I had been a mother myself for 18 months by then grin

Waswondering Tue 19-Aug-08 22:09:36

She really is, glucose! grin

We were laughing about her CC suit on the phone tonight - I have never owned a CC suit despite her best endeavours!!!

glucose Tue 19-Aug-08 22:28:22

I didn't think CC was still around. Does Richard Shops still exsist?

DontCallMeBaby Wed 20-Aug-08 07:42:38

CC definitely still around - in fact I think they're branded 'CC' now rather than the full Country Casuals. My mum likes them. Don't know about Richard Shops, that's another blast from the past, mum must've been shopping there when she was my age (she was so much more grown-up than me at 36).

I had thought I would try to wear something presentable in two weeks' time (two weeks today, gibber) but hadn't thought to coordinate with DD (also in bottle green). I'll probably be behind the camera though, unless DH is planning on hanging around to mop up the tears afterwards.

I will take pictures of dd1 in her uniform when she starts school in sept and i will not be included in any photo's.

And as for what i will be wearing it will be jeans and a t-shirt for a change.

I can't remember what I wore for dd's first day.

This year for ds's first day it is a Tuesday so I will be dropping him off then going off to work afterwards so it will probably be black trousers or skirt and a top (or blouse/jumper depending on the weather)!

Nemoandthefishes Wed 20-Aug-08 16:52:39

ohh havent even thought about it and just remembered DS school is videoing the whole occasion!!

priceyp Wed 20-Aug-08 17:01:48

Waswondering, where did you go to school? My first uniform was bottle green with light pink and dark pink tie. I loved it! Just wondered if it was the same one. Also my mum wore an orange and brown checked coat with brown flared cords and these gorgeous tan leather knee high boots (that I wish she still had for me to steal), and a cream polo neck. It was Sept 1980 (in Scotland) so bit chilly! Ahhhhhhhh

On my DSs first day of pre school I will probably be in jeans and t-shirt! Not quite the same! sad

Mercy Wed 20-Aug-08 17:02:56

I (probably) wore a pair of jeans, an old fleece and a pair trainers.

And will no doubt wear the same outfit next month.

I was studying for O levels in 1979!

Waswondering Wed 20-Aug-08 21:58:59

Pricey - that's so funny re the knee high boots. Mum had several pairs of those in 1979 and I feel she still has them!!

I started school in Northern Ireland (green/red/yellow stripey tie iirc).

It hadn't occurred to me to particularly dress up or be in the photos myself . .. until unbidden into my subconscious came that photo of mum holding my hand, smiling bravely at the camera.

Funny!

I'll be on my way to work, so will be suitably attired for the office.

grin

I am astounded anyone has any idea what their mother wore on their first day at school! I have no memory of it whatsoever, nor are there any pictures that I've come across. Still, it was 1971 and I wasn't wearing uniform, that much I know, things were still sensible and low key in those days.
I also have no idea what I was wearing on ds1s first day at school, nor are there any photos of me. And will give no thought to what I'm wearing when ds2 starts in Sept, except for about 30s when I'm getting dressed in the morning!

hannahsaunt Thu 21-Aug-08 09:58:08

Have just left ds2 at school for his first day. My outfit was more geared towards the sanding that needs done this morning (and resultant dust) than anything else. It's also tipping it down here so it was more of a mad dash in than any kind of exotic photo shoot (which was how ds1 started school in the tropics). Oh well.
