Don't know about the law but children in ds1's class have gone to the middle east for three weeks at a time during term...no apparent consequences from the school...

Oh cool. Its just I read somewhere that you can be fined if they have more than 5 days of unauthorised absence in a year.

Why don't you speak to the school?
It will probably have to be classed as unauthorised absence, and will go on record as such, but the school may be understanding.

You need to ask the school. The absence can be authorised at the discretion of the head teacher. They usually want a reason, and can be stroppy if the reason is wishy washy (you might find that if the reason is disney)

I took dd1 out of school for 2 weeks in May of her primary one year, to go to a very good friends wedding in Canada. that got the OK, but I had to take work for her, her teacher asked her to keep a diary of her holiday adn she did a little talk to the class when she got back about it.

Be prepared for them not to like it very much, but you can take them out regardless.

You might find the school will be a little less accomodating to other requests you might have, though.
