Richmond state primaries

Please excuse the long-ish post, DS and I just moved to London last week so I am like Alice in Wonderland at the moment.

I have secured him a place in a private school prior to moving, as I read local primaries are over-subscribed and hard to get in. I am considering moving him to a state primary for next school year (Sept 2021) and he will be in Year 2. Is this a wise move if I want him to go to a private secondary? Where do kids get tutors from, and from what age usually? (I ask as I read many threads saying tutors would be needed if I move to private in secondary)

The closest schools to us are Deer Park, Marshgate, Holy Trinity CoE, Vineyard, St Elizabeth's Catholic and maybe Sheen Mount? (I dont know if 1.37 miles is considered close). Deer Park is the closest to us but I can't seem to find anything on the school - can someone please provide me with some information?

Ideally I would like to visit the schools before listing them on the application but with Covid I'm not sure if it's possible, so would really appreciate any input.

It’s possible and many parents have done either state till 8 or state all the way through till 11+ and had tutoring, but I would say that competition in sw London is high at 11+ Probably more so than in other parts of the country. I have 3 at private school and they a being tutored for 11+ which is again a common combination around here. If your child is bright and you tutor and pick the right secondary school, there is no reason that they can’t go to a private secondary . All depends on the child

@notkat , Deer Park is a relatively new school about to move to its new permanent premises. You could try posting on a Richmond Facebook page to get more feedback. The state school year 2 place you will be given depends on your postcode, it's unlikely you will have a choice and it's dependent on another child leaving at the more popular schools like Vineyard/Mount Sheen/St Eliz.
Are you able to name the private school your son is going to?
I would focus on your ds's happiness and not worry about the future years (plus the complexities of having to give a term's notice to a private school but needing to take up a state school place immediately if offered it).
The great news is the whole area has the most amazing state and private schools for primary and secondary and you can have a fantastic family life.

Word of mouth usually. Most of my kids friends started tutoring in year 4 for 11+ and we are at a private school. Lots also tutor for 7+ so depends what your plan is as to when you start tutoring

Thanks Singingrain. I hadn't thought about the notice period and the need to take up a place immediately...hmm

DS will be going to Broomfield House. I'm sure it's a lovely school and all but I wouldn't mind saving the money for a few years either :)

I figured I can apply for state school for Sept 2021, see which one I get into and decide whether to move or not.
