The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas if you feel they are ready for it.

Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo. There is also an abridged version of Anne Frank's diary suitable for children.

Can I also say that Carrie's War was my favourite book aged 8, I read it over and over again.

There was a series of Diary books and there was one in this series but I cant remember the title I think the series was My Story.

My son enjoyed When Hitler Stole... too, around that age. End of the Anne of Green Gables series deals with WW1 rather than 2 but I think provides a very moving and perhaps less seen perspective from the people left behind.

The sequel to Boy, Going Solo, by Roald Dahl chronicles his WW2, and is a great book.

Various Michael Morpurgo books are set in World War 2. Adolphus Tips is one that immediately springs to mind.

My son enjoyed the books Sid’s War and The Sandbag Secrets at a similar age.

They are Sparks books for younger readers.

Adophus Tips is lovely and age appropriate. Shirley Hughes has written a couple of WW2 books - one is called Whistling in the Dark. The Silver Donkey by Sonya Hartnett. Wouldn't recommend the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas for an 8-year-old.

Yes Hitler’s Canary - brilliant!

There’s another book - about the size of Rose Blanche - The Lion and the Unicorn?

Lots of good ones recommended above, but I’d also add D-Day Dog by Tom Palmer and My Secret War Diary by Marcia Williams (illustrated with postcards and letters etc, so you’d need a physical copy for that one rather than ebook).
