When do schools get given the list of who is coming in September?

At what point do schools get given the list of who has successfully applied for their school and is starting in September - is it once all the places have been accepted or before then? Can they see which preference they were per child?

TIA

Ooh I was just coming on to ask this. Do schools know who’s applied to them before they get the final list of those who have a place?

AT the same time as the parents are notified.

If the LA is co-ordinating admissions then the schools get issued the list when the allocations have been run, just before letters and emails go out. Then they get updated ones as time goes on.

If the school has supplementary criteria (ie faith) then they get involved in ranking pupils and thus see the list earlier. They shouldn’t be able to do anything other than apply the published admissions rules in order though. And they shouldn’t see what place you have ranked them.

Schools get a list of those offered a place usually the day before parents get their notification.

They don't know if these are the final list, if people have moved, if the school is not the first choice or if parents have changed their minds.

In our county, schools can see how many have named them as a preference during the application process but they can't see details such as ranking or who has applied.

Depends on the county. We can see a list of who has applied but not how each person has ranked us as soon as the LA upload them to the system. Separately, we can see how many people have ranked us 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
Once places are offered, we see a full list of people who have been offered places. Again, we know how many have ranked as 1st, 2nd, etc. but not who they are. This list arrives on the system a few days before parent offer day.

Even when you rank the faith applications you have no idea where they have placed your school. Last year we had 240 applications for 35 places and only 5 appealed. If we were first choice on the majority of applications we would have had a lot more appeals.

They get the numbers of applications quite early on and then the actual numbers for 1st, 2nd preference not long after so they know their intake number but the names is the day before the parents.

From our school admissions secretary - they can see how many parents have put our school down as "a preference" about this point in time. They have no way of working out if we're number 1 or number 5 and which other schools are on the application.

Once the admissions magical computer has done its magical computer process thing is where they get a list of "these kids have been allocated a place at your school" which I believe they get the same time as parents do (may be a day or so in advance I'm not sure).

We rank our own admissions applications for first admission but are not given information on whether we are first, second, third or fourth preference. Once we have done that we have to submit the information back to the LA.

The LA send us the final list a few days before parents are told, but the information is embargoed and parents cannot find out early by ringing us.
Even if schools are giving a list prior to offer day, it will be embargoed information so you can't find out. first admissions is the ultimate responsibility of the LA and it is not the school's place to tell parents anything before offer day.

They don't find out before the places are given out.

My daughter's school was undersubscribed this year. They take 45 a year but only 36 kids. I know they knew they were undersubscribed before the list of names as my friend's mum works at the school. That made is hopeful she would get a place and she did. We didn't know because it's not our nearest school.

Dd's primary school were told which secondary their Y6 had got the day before the parents were told.

At some point next month our Head is told by Admissions how many people have put us as 1st choice and also informally finds out if the local schools are over subscribed or not. This may then impact on us.
The final list is sent to us a week or so before parents find out. I've always presumed it's because the day parents are informed usually falls in the Easter Holiday and it gives the school a chance to be fully informed before the calls starts on the first day back Smile Gives us a chance to prepare the packs of forms we need to send out.

We have already had the list of children for whom our school has been put as a preference but not whether we are first, second or third place. We spend some time "second guessing"-we look at how many siblings we have and where the applicants live to give us a rough guide to what our intake might be. We then have a school sweepstake to see who is right on allocation dayGrin

As you can see OP, it varies hugely between counties, so no one can tell you unless you say whereabouts you are.

School NEVER see preference information

Report
Wilmalovescake · 20/01/2020 23:12

I dont think it varies much at all; I think lots of posters are describing the same thing just in different words?

Report
liberame · 21/01/2020 07:01

No, it does vary. Nobody knows preferences I don't think (ie whether a particular parent has named them first, second or third). But here for example, all the primaries will be sent a full list of all the applicants in February and will rank them to send back to the LA. So the school will have a pretty good idea of who's going to be coming (at least who ciuld in theory be offered a place assuming they've named the school first). In other counties, it sounds like schools aren't involved in the ranking and just get sent a list of places offered in April, a couple of days before parents find out.

Report
Bluerussian · 21/01/2020 07:17

Schools are given the list of successful applicants at roughly the same time parents are told whether there child is accepted or not.
