Big or Small School

DS is 9 and is currently the only boy in his year group at school. He is happy and doing well at the school and able to play with the girls in his year and boys in other year groups but we worry about the future and not having a group of male friends to transfer to high school with.

If we were to move him to another primary school, the classes would be very big and, personality wise, we don't think the school would suit him as well. He isn't complaining about the situation so don't know whether to leave him where he is for now since he seems happy or if we should make a move to give him the opportunity to make friends in his year group.

If he's happy playing with girls, then I wouldn't force the move. Does he do any sports? He could make male friends there.

He's not a football type, JoJo, but has various out of school clubs he goes to where he tends to mix with people from his own school. The kids seem to be quite tribal about what school they come from.

I don't think it's important to have a group of friends to move to high school with as they very quickly make new friends and it's almost an advantage to be starting a fresh. That said if you're worried why not have him join a sports club in the area of the most likely high school so he can meet a few friends who might be there?

I would leave him as he’s happy.
