Will this get him into good sets for secondary school?

Yes.
Secondary may well do their own assessments in Sept but if he keeps that standard up he will be in higher sets, most likely.

Why is it that only the parents of high-achieving children have difficulty understanding SATs scores?

Nobody ever comes on here and says :" my son scored 84 for maths. Is that good?"

There are no guarantees. My daughter got similar scores and has been placed in set 2s. This has also affected her predicted grades and is predicted 6s where she is working at a level 5/6 now (inyear 9) and has 2 years to go still lol. The system is weird if you ask me. (They use FFT)

has your son finished primary school happy and wanting to learn? If so that’s the main thing. You know he’s done really well - mine didn’t get anything like that but he’s pleased with himself and excited and looking forward to secondary school, and I am proud of him.

100 is the middle. The scores follow a normal distribution. Most students are close to 100. Scores well above 100 are very good. Scores closer to 80 are not so good.

50% of students score below 100, 50% above.

Funny how no parent ever comes on here and says DC scored 80, 80 & 82. Our school doesn't use SATS results to decide sets. They set their own tests.

Those are all "meets standard for age group" range but really near the top of that. Not quite tipped yet into exceeds expectations. My DD got slightly higher bit not above 120 in any and got same result.
There are scoring websites that explain. And your school report should have explained.

I'd buy DS an ice-cream to celebrate and tell him he's been very clever and was oh so close to getting a higher rating on basis of that. 😍😍🥰
You have to.support them and tell them when they have done well.

My DD has had icecreams, cola and sweets to celebrate and knows she is so close to getting better scores if she reads and studies just that little a bit more if she decides that. Or she can continue doing good & great. That we just want her to do her personal best. Our secondary school retests them anyway at start of year 7 and may ignore the SATs... ☺️.

Not quite right. Anything over 110 is greater depth. 120 is the maximum you can get.

"A scaled score of over 110 indicates that your child is working at ‘greater depth’ within the expected standard. This means their attainment sits within the top 10% of Year 6 children nationally."

I don't think you are right on this (though as you are a teacher maybe you are). Given that around 2/3rds get expected standard in any one test?

His results are fine OP but maybe no need to call Oxford just yet. Our secondary tests students themselves and sets on the basis of those results. And it only sets for maths in Y7 anyway.

Come on OP, what does the narrative say? Are you saying school handed you a single sheet with column numbers & zero explanation or other info about your child's yr6?

We got a 7 pg letter for DS's end of report.

1 cover pg (school name, logo) with "Your child's report explained" on back

Single side attendance record for the year

2 single sided pgs about my child, dense with text, including 'Attainment', 'Progress' and 'Effort' single word summaries for individual sections

1 pg with school results compared to national for KS2 SATs with web page addresses listed at bottom to explain things like 'scaled score'

1 x double sided pg of my child's results expressed as numbers (with explanatory notes, including that a 'scaled score' is 'the national standard')

1x 'End of year review' pg by DS where he mispelt everything wrote some sentences about how his year went, and cut off slip for us to send back a reply if we want

Why would I need to boast anonymously to a group of strangers? Yes, they were given to us without guidance.

I am never sure why people are spiteful on here.

My other son got such low SATs scores that it precluded him getting a diagnosis for a learning difficulty.... But I can't remember what they were!!

I have done a Google search but it only explains the under or over 100 thing and lots about 2017/2018 results

Again, thanks for those that have answered kindly. English is my second language which makes this trickier
