Teacher played April Fools prank

Okay, so I know I'm super late as we're near the end of April, but I was just RE telling the story to my mum & it stirred up feelings again. On April the 1st, I picked my son (9) up from after school club, he was grumpy and a bit tearful on the way home. Later, as we were chatting at home, he told me his teacher & TA had played a prank on the class, they were told to keep their coats on as they were going on a surprise trip to Legoland, they were super excited & the TA was directed by the teacher to check if all their pack lunches were ready. All the kids thought they were going according to my son. But it was an April Fools, many of the children, including my son cried, he was okay talking about it, but only after I told him I didn't think it was a funny prank either.
Even as I write this my belly burns, I feel I should of rang the next day to say something, but I wasn't sure if I was over reacting or being over protective. Now, I feel I want to say something when we get back from half term, just as an FYI to be mindful of pranks next year.
Would you just leave it now as too much times passed? Am I blowing it out of proportion?
Thanks
E

Oh that's shit and I would also say something! It's absolutely NOT on. Some of those kids possibly NEVER get a day out somewhere like legoland...and to be so crass as to wind them up in this way is not what I'd expect of a teacher.

Yes have a word with the headteacher to make sure the teacher is told this isn’t responsible. But that’s it, he hasn’t been mentally scared for life from this, raise a concern and move on

Oh that's nasty. Complain to the head teacher.

That's what I thought HennyPennyHorror, some children would of never been there before, thanks guys, I'll raise a concern/mention it after the half term

god imagine the excitement some of those kids felt, only to have it ripped away from them and most likely laughter from the teacher and TA
some of those kids might never go outside of their neighbourhood let alone to the next town, and holidays might be things that they know the rich folks have
such a nasty thing to do

Before everyone gets their pitchforks put, I would advise caution. This is a new poster and it’s Easter holidays. Therefore a little part of me wonders

Just to echo this, especially at the time this thread was posted.

Also i've noticed a treand of these erm not so genuine posters using a real first name then a load of numbers Emma, Abbey, Sarah wonder if they are prehaps friends, related, in the same house, thevsame room, thevsame chair/bed even

Thanks guys, just for clarity, Im RE laying my flooring over the Easter holidays so up late moving from room to room, my mum came round after a night shift & we got talking, hence the late post. And I guess to be fair, it is my first post here, just looking for a bit of advice/support really. Judging by the reactions of people feeling it's false, it has futher reinforced my feelings of needing to bring it up to someone senior at the school, if anything just to make them more aware for the future, thanks

I'm sure if other children were crying the staff would have realised immediately it was a stupid idea and apologised. Have you seriously not had a chance to raise this before? If it was that upsetting, the day after would have been appropriate. A child upset after ASC would normally mean something that the upsetting thing happened much more recent than first thing in the morning. I assume the staff thought that year 4/5 would know it was a joke and I expect most did but unfortunately a few didn't.

Thanks guys, I will update once I talk to someone, I think i might just say it informally to someone as an FYI. I do contact the school normally if there's an issue straight away, but to be honest, I wasn't sure if I would be totally over reacting, I think the teacher sees me as over protective anyway, and now this amount of times lapsed I feel even more crazy bringing it up to them. But I definitely will, like you said, other parents may have complained already, so I can just add to voice to the concern, thanks

I am a teacher and would think nothing of doing a prank on a class if I had a good relationship with them but nothing like this where they might actually get upset!

I once got a whole class to turn around the other way when a child was at the loo, and were merrily working away as if it was totally normal when the kid came back.

I once had a class who had just finished some big exams and I had them for a lesson the next day. They loved drawing on isometric paper and I had no intention of doing any real work with them, but I made booklets with a GCSE Maths front and back cover and filled with isometric paper. The look on their faces when I told them we were now starting to do past papers for GCSEs was priceless and I handed out these papers. They loved me after as they love dotty paper and we sat for an hour drawing cubes and listening to music!

Trinity, your pranks sound ace!
My ds' school once had an Easter church service on April Fool's Day so his teacher told all the children to turn their jumpers back to front so the parents sitting at the back could see the school logo. It took them ages to work out what was going on but no-one was upset because it wasn't a nasty prank, unlike the one you've described.

Trinity & Harriet, those types of fun pranks are completely in the spirit of April Fools & sound funny, I work in a setting similar to a PRU for boys with SEMH so thought I was being overly aware of how such a prank could impact on a child, I no longer feel this way! I'm so glad I posted for advice

An impromptu trip to Lego land which the parents etc knew nothing about? A kinder surprise egg was it you had this Easter?

When I was 9yo our class teacher gave us all a letter to take home detailing out class trip in an aeroplane to see the moon. Only one child in the class had been on an aeroplane - this was a BIG deal!

Many off us returned the parental permission slip the next day only to be told it was as April fool joke. None of us cried.

I can imagine a teacher this, OP, but with a class who could find it for funny. They seem to have misjudged.

Report
MerryMarigold · 22/04/2019 21:19

I think 9 is quite old to not realise it was a joke. My ds certainly would have realised and told everyone else in the class who may not have twigged. It would have been cruel to Reception kids but y4/5? Not so much.

I think this is too cruel as a prank. If any parent did that to their children, I can imagine how it will end. So, I do think many parents got angry. So why no one has complained to school, including you, until now?
