Plus fit school uniform (not sure else where to put this)

So now the drama of waiting for primary school allocations is over I now have the headache of trying to find school uniform for my DD.

She’s 5 at the beginning of September, so one of the older ones of her year group. I’ve always had to go a size up for her clothes as she’s fairly tall and carries a fair bit of weight. She’s currently 112cm and 25kg, so fairly chunky bless her.

I’ve tried Asda and Sainsbury’s normal sized school uniform and id need to go to age 7 for them to fit her properly around the belly etc without her weight being obvious, but then of course it’s too long.

She’s more of a dress / skirt, polo shirt and cardigan kind of girl.

So I’ve been suggested you can buy plus fit school uniform. Can anyone recommend some brands for us to try?

Also - as an extra question.... her school says they can have logo or plain cardigans or sweatshirts. Would you personally spend the money on logo stuff or just go for the plain stuff? Thanks

M&S do a plus fit uniform range. I personally buy the logo jumpers/ cardigans as that’s what most of the kids tend to wear. I only get 2 of each and they last the year so not too expensive

Marks and Spencer!!! May be a bit more pricey, but they have a fairly good range. I've always bought the logo cardigans for my kids. I also work in a primary school and probably about 95% of the kids have logo cardis/jumpers.

John Lewis is usually a bigger fit.

Re:logo, my daughter's primary school and ever other round here tend to offer reasonably priced sweatshirts/cardigans, complete with logo from the school office. I have gone with them because they are of good quality and tend to be warmer than the cardigans from a supermarket.

And now I’m panicking because I’ll be judged as having the “fat” child in the class. When in reality we’ve been trying everything possible and even following a very healthy diet and walking 10 miles a day she’s not shifting weight

I would have a logo jumper/cardigan for school photographs etc but non-logo the rest of the time. They are easier and cheaper to replace if they come home covered in paint/glue/marker pens, etc.

Have you checked that the diet doesn't contain lots of hidden sugars (eg raisins) and also your portion sizes?

teentimestwo we’ve been referred to a dietician so we shall see. It’s never been an issue at preschool but kids can be mean and I worry about the bigger kids being horrible in primary school

I doubt the kids will be mean in Reception, but as your DD gets older she will notice herself. Hope the dietician is helpful.

I've spent years turning up trousers for my petite DDs. Skirts are less of a problem as they tend to be too short imo anyway so if you have to go up a size you might just get a sensible length.

Tesco also do some things in a wider fit. I bought logo cardigans one year and the cost made me cry when they got wrecked with whiteboard pen so I've got supermarket ones ever since - they're thinner but the kids school is always bloody boiling hot so they prefer them.

Most people do a mix of logo and non logo in early infants here. There's a lot to be said of buying little to start with of different things, then top up with more of what she likes.

Cycling shorts for sport you can easily go up to age 7/8 no problem.

Generally the more expensive the uniform the more generously it's cut (Asda can be an exception). In Sainsbury's I only buy the drop waisted summer dresses. However she is fine in anything M&S or the more expensive Tesco stuff without needing to go wide fit. Try different styles. The soft jersey pinafores are great and cut more generously than, say, an A line summer dress. If you've only tried Asda and Sainsbury's I wouldn't rule out regular fit from elsewhere yet. JL is not cheap but has lovely fabrics that DC like wearing and just happens to be very generously cut.

JL is definitely more generously cut, and longer too. Their uniforms are great. We buy 3 skirts. Would a pinafore work for your DD, as you don't need to worry so much about the fit of the waist?

We only buy one cardigan per year, and it seems to do OK. I think DD takes it off as soon as she gets into school.

Whatever cardigans you get do not get ones with stoopid flower buttons on them - Sainsbury's I hate you- because they are fiddly enough for me to do in a hurry and utterly impossible for a reception child. My DD's school logo top has nice chunky buttons she can do herself and tumble dries quickly- sort of fleece material - and is therefore so much better than the plain ones. It is a funny cut though- very long.

Logo polos under pinnafores are pointless. So just buy a couple for special days.
They dont tend to keep their polos tucked into their skirts anyway. So this will be more flattering. Cardigans are really never buttoned up.
I've got a solid child too the same age and we sometimes go up to 7-8. Bless her!

Thank you all so much. You’ve made me smile when I was worried I’d get flamed for having a bigger child. She’s such a different build to her brother who’s 5’1 and 5 1/2 stone at 10. Yet they have the same parents, diet (though portion sizes obviously differ) and exercise regime too!

I have this problem my son is larger seen a dietician and she's happy with what he eats and portion sizes he plays football and just can't shift it, I've found the 'plus' sizes in next and marks and spencer are not big enough, he has had Tesco plus fit this year and trousers from sturdy kids it's a minefield finding what suits your own LO. Good luck definitely not alone with a chubby kid

Asda do jersey skirts and pinafores which have lots of stretch. Great also for girls who object to tight waistbands.
