Is it ok for a male teacher to say to an 8 yr old ‘only dogs sniff bums’?

My 8 year old daughter came home and said a boy in her class had chocolate on his face and her male teacher had said to him ‘only dogs sniff peoples bums’. I was horrified, checked with a friend I trust and my sister also once a teacher if I was right to be and emailed the head saying I was concerned that it showed a lack of judgement on the teachers part. The head wasn't concerned and I got a very dismissive reply. Is it ok? Have I got it wrong? Am I being a prude? Is my whole idea of teacherhood wrapped up in Matilda’s relationship with Miss Honey..?.It’s entirely possible...

It’s not something I would have expected to be said to an 8 year old. Secondary school maybe but I don’t personally think you are being a prude.

If it wasn’t to my child I don’t think I’d have got in touch with the school though but that’s just me.

Why is it inappropriate for a male teacher and not a female one ?

He's talking about dogs - not referring to gay men - I assume that's what your alluding too as you highlight a male teacher said it.

He's making a funny remark.

You have quite a warped mind. I'm shocked at your thought processes.

Also not sure why it’s relevant that the teacher is male, but still think it’s a gross and weird thing to say to a child

Don’t know why I put male teacher. He’s the first male teacher we’ve had and all the teachers we’ve had before have been very different. I suppose more like myself. I can’t ever imagine saying that. I don’t find that joke funny, I find it really crude. And it seems highlighted that it’s being said to a child by a grown man. It’s like he’s in the pub but he’s not is he.

God Charlie none of that even occurred to me!

Why is it about homosexuality? I wouldn't have assumed that, wow!

I don't think its funny, stupid, immature and a bit inappropriate, what an eejit of a teacher!

I don’t know. Choose your battles. Do you really need for this to upset you so much? Short answer: No.

He’s a new teacher in the middle of the year. He’s told me three times he has a big personality, he has called my daughter the bane of his life in front of me, my daughter told my husband today as an ongoing joke the teacher pushes a boy into a table and that while the teacher
talks about bullies being bad he himself is actually a bully...so I’m already not much of a fan.

I'm nearly 40 and didn't get this. Not sure 8 year olds would Confused

My daughter definitely got it and the boy it was said to got it also.

Wtf? No, pass all these things onto his superior. He should not routinely pushing anyone into a table, see how he'd like it if one single parent did that to him.

He's not funny, just a bully, he wouldn't get away with treating adults like this.

Can you explain what harm might come to children from hearing this.

You are totally overreacting

It’s good to have men in the classroom gives the kids a more balanced view of society rather than just being raised by women

Calm down and chill out a bit

I don’t know. I suppose that’s my reason for asking. Is this like acceptable? Because my dad wouldn’t say that, nor my mum, or I, or my husband, or my friends. If they were watching something on telly I would suddenly be looking at what they were watching if I’d heard that. But that’s not to say it would be harmful just sort of unpleasant, maybe indicative of something worse to come?

Why is your 8 year old able to interpret something like this as some sort of homosexual sex innuendo? Confused That would concern me in itself that she can make those associations so young.

All seems a bit odd to me.

I never said it was homosexual, she understood it meant poo on his face.

The joke is gross but the rest of it I don't see as a problem. He does sound like he has a big personality and that's fine.
