Looking for an independent primary school in north London for my daughter. She is currently in Reception in a State school.

Does anyone have any reccommendation please? It would also help to know why you are reccomending.

I have already visited St Margaret and Goodwins but neither seem to be what I am looking for.

Thank You!!

Hi OP

Where exactly do you live? For me north London starts at the top of the City of London so is a massive area.

What sort of schools are you looking for? Those near me range from being really academic to rather alternative. Please could you let us know a bit more about you and your child?

are you looking to do the 7+ and prepared to prep/tutor for it or looking for somewhere not selective/less selective

how far out will you go - out to Habs/NLCS?

Hello, you are both right i should have given more details.

So I am based in Muswell hill and ideally I would like to find a good independent school from next year (i.e. year 1).

I would consider both selective and not but my understanding is that the selective have no space unless I go for either chance vacancy or 7+ point of entry (if they have one).

Given that I would like my daughter to start in September 2019 I would be happy with a not selective one.

I am looking for a co-ed school that gives priority to extra curriculum activities as well as accademics and possibly good facilities (i.e. science lab, p.e. space etc).

I really liked the prospect of Grimsdell in Mill Hill
But the first available day for a visit is at the end of April and they say they have no space for September 2019....

Hope this gives you an idea.

Thanks again

Norfolk house is in Muswell hill. Grimsdell and Highgate has 7+ but that means entry in 2021 for you. The avenue prep may actually fit the bill but you will have to take the 7+ - it would help you through 7+ to the other 2. But seems Norfolk House may well be your best bet with a view to leaving at 11+

Northridge House is also an option

@newmummycwharf, I am afraid Norfolk house did not convince me...

fair enough. We have a few friends there who love it but I've never been myself. I would suggest you check out The avenue - Highgate and Grimsdell are both highly regarded. We loved Highgate but didn't make it through the 3+. Grimsdell grounds are amazing and seems well rounded curriculum.

I wouldn't touch Norfolk house personally. You're options are fairly limited because you missed reception entrance. How about Annemount or The Avenue? Both pre-preps so only a stopgap measure but will give you time to prep for the 7+. The head at Annemount is bonkers and rather unpleasant if you disagree with her but it's a solid little school. Neither have facilities but at that age it really doesn't matter. She'll only be there until the end of year 2. Maybe put your name down for an occasional place at changing too.

There's also Salcombe prep in Southgate which would be better than trying to fight your way into Hampstead every morning.

@Newmummy & Iggypoppers - Grimsdell would be my first choice but I will probably try my luck with The Avenue so she can prepare for the 7+.
Thank you All so much.

Which state primary are you at OP? If you're happy to tell us more about why you want to switch it will help us guide you to a specific school.

There's Golders Hill too, also goes to year 2.
