Can I ask what homework/support your Y6's schools are currently providing for SATS preparation? Thank you

We're doing one afternoon a week of revision. Homework isn't a massive amount and is set based what we've done in English/maths/revision that week.
There's an after school booster which is targeted at certain children and isn't compulsory but because there are biscuits nobody misses it. We have a proper varied curriculum all year unlike other schools who seem to teach nothing but English and maths all year

Ours has a 50 question spag test once a fortnight and a 5 min maths hw twice a week. They have breakfast club twice a week where the advanced eng and maths kids do extra work and two afternoon clubs for those that are struggling. Also target intervention during assembly. Still doing a whole curriculum which in the past they did not offer.

Maths test paper every Friday to do to time (30 mins) over the weekend. Smaller amounts of homework on Mondays and Wednesdays. In school they are on half-termly testing to monitor progress and identify where to focus. It's about right.

My Y6 class have reading homework each week (pages to read and questions) plus Times Tables Rockstars and Prodigy Maths (optional. but they all engage).

That's it.

My ds would not be doing those, if that had been the case (he's in Y8 now)

DS needs to do two to three maths tests on MyMaths each week.
They also have either 2 pages of homework from their CGP English Grammar type workbook or a spag test online.
They have spelling tests as well, but I think only at the end of the term.
We had to buy the SATS buster books and he has to do one 10-minute test each week.
He also has to attend booster on grammar and the majority of his class has to attend booster on maths as well.
During literacy classes he has to write extra neatly, because they would like to enter him into the top set for writing assessment.

His teachers seem really focussed. It seems to me that nearly every teacher in the school is roped into Y6 boosters.

DD did her SATs last year. They did some work in school I suspect but no homework at all and they remained laidback about it. Their results overall were very good indeed.

DS2 is Yr8. He was loaned a SATs revision book which stayed in his bag until being returned. The teacher put on twice weekly after-school boosters, I think from Feb half-term onwards. DS2 didn't go to any, there was one other child who didn't go either.

DS2 told me recently that the class teacher would remind the class of the boosters and add "of course DobbinBoy and X won't be coming as they are so arrogant". Had I have known at the time I would have taken it up with the Head. DS2 enjoys tests, is fairly academically able and had scored well on practise papers. I actually thought it was better he didn't go, so those that were struggling didn't have DS2 there breezing through it.

DS2 and his friend both got good scores.

If these tests require special preparation, then there is something amiss with them.

Thy are not testing your child, they are judging the school. No need to destroy the natural flow of their learning just because of them.

DD is in year 6. She has a bit more homework than last year, but still not loads (a sheet of maths plus reading and spelling). I know they are doing practice SATs papers in school but I'm not sure how frequently - maybe once every few weeks?

They do prep lessons after school, split into groups of similar ability. Catch up for those struggling, hard push for those expected to excel.

@Dobbinsveil It is awful to badmouth a child.

Our school is so paranoid, because all the teachers' pay level depend on the SATS result. We are one of the poorest regions in the country anyway.

Kids are offered biscuits if they turn up to the boosters. On the SATS days they get breakfast and even a packet of crisps afterwards. DS loves his food.

We told DS not to worry about SATS, but please do your best for your teachers.

Usual homework (about an hour a week) which is very SPAG focused plus Manga High. Which is fine.

The multiple mock SATs weeks (I think dd has just done her third, with more to come) appear to bore the academically able, stress those who struggle with tests and generally provoke all sorts of unpleasantness in the class (possibly because they peer mark, so everyone know who has done well andy who hasn’t). That’s not so fine.

It's all about SATS here. Lexia, Mathletics and TT Rockstars out of school and tests every couple of weeks. Kids are stressed to the max with it, especially as teacher has been telling them since Christmas that the SATS are only a 'couple of weeks' away and not the 17 weeks that they were when she first said this

@Devondreamer According to our teachers the last 2 years spelling test did not include any of the set words. However there was a pattern to the type of words they asked if you look at the tests. For instance thumb / crumb, a word ending with -ture, etc.

Thank you everyone. It would seem that schools vary enormously in what support they give the children. Hope your dc's get on okay in May and most importantly they don't get too stressed.

We're in a grammar school area and I think that makes a difference. Everyone gets so worked up about the 11+ (those who take it, anyway), that they don't have any energy left to get worked up about SATS. And SATS seems unimportant by comparison because it doesn't determine which school you go to. I imagine this really irritates the primary schools, who get judged far more on their SATS results than the 11+ results.

Wow, quite surprised about how they do in other schools. Our school's results aren't so great, but understandable if they don't prep like others do.
