4+ Assessments 2019

My daughter who is a late summer baby will be doing some assessments over the next few months. Looks like SHHS will begin their at the end of October and others in January. She's in a school that goes only to 7 (which she is really enjoying). We thought we'd put her down for some assessments so as to not need to go through the stress of 7+ if we can avoid it. Having said that, our hopes aren't high given when we visited, we did not see many summer babies. I recall seeing 2 born between June-August out of 3 classes at SHHS. Just thought I would see who else is going through the 4+ journey.

We also have her down for Channing and NLCS. Hans is a bit too far out for us (as is NLCS but they have the bus system).

Hi @timeofyear we’re in a similar position (I wonder if our DDs are at the same school!) How are you getting on with the applications? My DD is also summer born.

Hi @isitwinetimeyet16 - perhaps! We had only applied to three schools and although she has got to second round for them, I am wondering whether we should have applied to more! Oh well. Just need to get through second round and then it’s a waiting game. How about you? What schools did you apply for?

We've only applied for 2 at 5+ entry. NLCS and Channing. She is also down for Highgate and Belmont though which would be 7+. I'd rather keep her co-ed which is why I'd be tempted to leave her at her current school until 7 then try for Highgate but I feel like I couldn't turn down a Channing place if we were offered one! What are you thinking?

I agree - would find it difficult to turn down Channing if offered. I think that if she accepted Channing now, she could still try for Highgate at 7, whereas there is no longer any 7+ entry for Channing.

As someone who didnt apply to Channing. I am curious as to whether you would pick it over nlcs? What edge does it have? All the best to you both

Good question @runrunmum. Academically NLCS is way ahead of Channing but proximity wise Channing is so much easier. We would have to use the bus service which still makes for a long day for a 4 year old. It’s also not very easy if we as parents had to go to the school for any events on a work day. Anyway - here’s hoping it’s a problem we will need to work through. Which schools did you apply to?

Hi @RunRunMum! I feel exactly the same as Time - we are very local to Channing and could walk to school, whereas NLCS would be a long drive away. I also feel it would be so much easier for my DD to have local friends when it comes to play dates etc. But certainly I know NLCS has a fantastic reputation for academics as well as beautiful facilities. Would be lovely to have the option! Are either of you going for round 2 at NLCS tomorrow?

Hi everyone!
For NLCS the website says that the second round assessments are on Thursday 17th and Friday 18th January 2019, although some parents I know have been told their assessment is next week. Do you think this means that they have added an extra date in for those that cannot make it to these dates or have NLCS called back more girls for the second round than usual? (Just weighing up the chances here!!)

Sorry to jump in. My daughter had 2nd round at SH this week (4+) and her pre-school have now received a reference request. Do you think they request for all 2nd round girls or only those being considered for offers?

Yes most of them ask for referneces from current preschool. Ah ok thanks for the info both. Nice to understand. We are doing nlcs so fingers crossed

@isitwinetimeyet16 and @Timeofyear - I hope your daughters got thru a school of your choice. Can you please give me some tips on the NLCS 4+ assessments? My DD is a summer born ...Thanks a ton xx

Hi @dmukhe02 I believe the assessment was the usual - sitting quietly, listening to instructions, colouring and writing her name? She also mentioned something about throwing beanbags into a frog's mouth!

Timeofyear · 17/06/2019 20:43

Hi @dmukhe02 - seems like it was so long ago when in reality it was only 6 months.
From what I could gather from my daughter, colouring, drawing, listening to a story, singing a song. Good luck!
