Compulsory school age and attendance in reception

DD, 4.5yo, started school last week and is doing days until 2pm this week then full time next week. She's already very tired and upset about going to school in mornings as she's nervous about the lunchtime being in a big hall.

She doesn't turn 5 until April so won't be CSA until next September. So if I decide to keep her off for one day if she's too tired, does this count towards the school's attendance figures? I know her school has very poor attendance and I don't want to add to this, but I also want to do what's right by my child (and they start school too early in the UK I think).

Iirc it will count towards their figures.

If you have her there full time, it will count towards their figures. You could (if you don't work) have her go there part time before the summer term. We had DD going mornings because she couldn't cope otherwise. But the school were a little put out.

That's a pain. She was a bit happier at pick up today at least. I know they get used to it but it's such a change at a young age.

Tbh even in year two most of the kids are exhausted while they get used to being at school again.

Its par for the course - they are all exhausted for at least the first term in reception. I have two summer horns (one stared reception 4 days after her 4th birthday) and I can say behaviour deteriorated and we had a few meltdowns in the first term- after Xmas was much better. Give her time to adjust. 90% of the kids will be feeling the same and the teachers are used to it.

I agree a lot of the new starters will be very tired to start with (DS1 the exception).

Part time school is an option if you are concerned though. DS2 was in Reception last year and he did a 4 day week til January (born July). He does have some SEN and I was concerned about the length of the school day/week compared to the 15 hours pre-school he had. In hindsight he would have been fine going full time from the get go but his teachers were suppotive and DS and I did enjoy our extra day together.

I think that's a factor as her brother started school as a September born and he loved it (still does) and wasn't remotely tired out by It! The 6 months between them is highlighted with starting school. She won't show upset willingly to anyone so I'll keep an eye on her and see how it goes.

Put her to bed earlier and she's upset again and saying she wants to stay home. Then as I left she wailed "but I'll have to stay in school until I'm 10!"

I informed her that it's actually 16... Grin Sad she was not impressed!

Her absence will be marked with an X rather than unauthorised because she is not CSA. You might find though that it all gets a lot easier soon. The first week is the most exhausting and the lunch hall won't be scary for ever! Good luck.
